Have Unwanted Electronics?
Springfield residents and businesses gather your old, used and unwanted electronics and take them to BLH Computers located at 1832 Stevenson Drive to be recycled. With proof of residency you can drop off computers, radios, televisions, cameras, phones, and other electronics to BLH for recycling--most at no charge! A fee will be charged for wooden console televisions, but a coupon for the same value will be issued back. For more details and drop off times call BLH at 585-1580.

Harvesting H2O
Many people believe that water is an infinite resource. However, especially in the dry parts across the U.S., communities are using more water than underground aquifers are naturally receiving. One solution that can help community water supplies is the use of a rain harvesting system, most commonly in the form of a rain barrel. And, aside from helping the environment, another benefit of rain barrels is the money your household can save--especially in the summer months.

Depending on where you live and the amount of rainfall in your area, you can collect a large amount of water. For every inch of rain that falls on a roof of 1,000 square feet, you can collect approximately 600 gallons of water. This means that for every 10 inches of rain falling on a roof you can collect 6,000 gallons of water!

Most water that is collected in rain barrels is used to water landscapes. As the rain water falls and runs off your roof it picks up very few contaminants. Therefore, using rain water on your landscape actually helps keep your soil balanced and free of chemicals found in your community water system. With the help of a filtration system, you can also drink the rain water. Be sure to check your town's requirements for filtration systems if you plan on using the water for drinking.

*Creative idea: Rain barrels come in many different varieties, but a fun activity you can take on yourself or as a family project is to decorate the barrel to fit your style or home decor. For example, use paint to simply change the color of the barrel, or go all out and create designs to give the barrel some flair. The only limitation is your imagination!

Adopt-a-Street
As part of the Springfield Green initiative created by Mayor Timothy Davlin in an effort to beautify the Springfield area, community groups and businesses can adopt a street to maintain. Modeled after the Illinois Adopt-a-Highway program, Adopt-a-Street gives volunteers the opportunity to clean up the sides of streets and ditches in our capital city. Not only does this program help out the community we live in, but it is a great way to get outdoors and spend time with co-workers and friends.

Let's work together to make Springfield more beautiful and environmentally friendly by getting the litter off of our streets. If your organization or business would like more information on the program, or is interested in adopting a street, visit the Springfield Green website at: http://www.springfield.il.us/green/AdoptaStreet.html.

Reusable Bags
Lately we have been seeing a push for businesses and individuals to "think green" and be more environmentally friendly. One way to help out the environment is by using reusable shopping bags instead of plastic, and even paper, bags. Reusable bags, when chosen properly, can last for a long period of time. When looking for a reusable bag be sure you go for quality. Look for bags made from either PETE, recycled cotton or hemp. These bags are usually long-lasting and durable. If you choose a cheap bag that falls apart quickly it will only end up in the landfill with all those paper and plastic bags, defeating the purpose of your purchase.

Here are a few quick facts to encourage you to consider reusable shopping bags:

*Each year Americans alone use 10 billion paper bags, which results in cutting down 14 million trees.
*The petroleum used to make 18 plastic bags could drive a car for 1 mile.
*The worldwide consumption of plastic bags is over 1 million per minute.
*Plastic bags are not      biodegradable and take approximately 500 years to decay in a landfill.
*It costs more to recycle a bag than to produce a new one.
*Nearly 200 different species of sea life die due to plastic bags.

As part of Ace's Helpful Earth Choices program developed to promote eco-friendly practices, we encourage you to visit any of our 10 Ace Hardware locations on Saturday, July 31st to receive a FREE resuable bag. Just print out this newsletter and show it to any Ace team member. Limit 1 free bag per customer.

Charity Feature: CMN
Since its founding in 1983 by Marie Osmond and her family, Children's Miracle Network's mission is to generate funds and awareness programs in partnership with, and for the benefit of, member hospitals/ foundations and the children they are privileged to serve. Holding true to its mission, CMN is a non-profit organization that raises funds for more than 170 children's hospitals to provide treatment to children of all ages and backgrounds. From broken bones to cancer, CMN hospitals will provide charity care worth billions during this year alone.

CMN is based on two main goals:
   1. Help as many children as possible by raising funds for children's hospitals
   2. Keep funds in the community in which they were raised to help local children.

As a corporate partner with CMN, each of our 10 Ace locations sell the infamous red and yellow Miracle Balloons for $1 each. Since May of 2004 our customers have helped us raise $12,806 for CMN. Thank you for all your generosity--it means the world to the children and their families!
