Gutter Clutter
Your gutters are very important add-ons to your home that direct rain runoff to prevent water damage to your home and flooding in your basement. No matter how important, though, gutters oftentimes go left unattended. In order to ensure your home is protected and maintain you gutter's external appearance you should unclog your gutters at least twice annually (once in the spring and once in the fall)--more often if you have tree limbs directly above your gutters.

Why clean the gutters?
When your gutters collect leaves, twigs and other debris water is unable to drain through the downspout and can sit stagnant in your gutters. This can cause your gutters to rust and can attract pesky insects like mosquitoes. At the same time, as this debris collects, plants can start growing in your gutters. This added weight in the gutters can end up pulling your gutters away from your home--not to mention the eyesore trees growing in your gutters are!

How to clean your gutters:
You want to begin by scooping the debris away from the downspout using a hand trowel or a leaf scoop designed for gutters. For quicker clean up, place the debris in a trash bag or small bucket instead of tossing it to the ground to be picked up later. Once the large debris is cleaned from your gutters, use a hose to flush out the small particles left behind.

If your downspout is not draining properly try spraying your hose down from the top to remove the blockage. If this does not work, run a snake up from the bottom to free the downspout of any collected debris.

Birdhouse Project
Building a birdhouse can be a great weekend project for beginning and experienced woodworkers alike. If you are looking for a project you can enjoy with your family, even after it's finished, a birdhouse is perfect for you.

There are many different types of birdhouses you can build, varying in size and structure. Therefore, you can pick a birdhouse based on your personal experience level.

Once you build your birdhouse, you can even make it your very own by painting and decorating it as you please. After picking a spot to put your new birdhouse, wait for a family to make it their home and enjoy watching them day after day.

There are many websites you can visit to find free birdhouse plans and ideas. Follow the links below to find the right birdhouse for you!

4th of July BBQ
Planning on having a get together this 4th of July? How about having a barbeque to entertain your guests? Although the process of cooking the meat perfectly takes several hours, there is nothing like serving fall-off-the-bone BBQ to please a crowd. Be sure to include rolls, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, tea, and cobbler with vanilla ice cream to complete the meal.

To create the perfect BBQ, you will need a great brisket. Select a brisket that has a layer of fat evenly distributed on the top (the fat cap), good marbling, and weighs 6-10 pounds. The night before smoking the brisket you will want to marinade it by placing the brisket in a resealable bag with marinade in the fridge. Try poking holes in the meat to really let the marinade soak in. The next day, drain the marinade and dry rub the brisket with rub of your choice. Now you are ready to smoke the brisket for 1 to 1 1/2 hours per pound*

Try making your own Kansas City BBQ sauce and serve it on the side. You will need:

  3 tablespoons of olive oil
  3 cloves garlic, minced
  1 cup ketchup
  1/4 cup water
  1/4 cup white vinegar
  1/4 cup brown sugar
  2 tablespoons of paprika
  1 tablespoon chili powder
  1 teaspoon cayenne

Saute the oil and garlic in a saucepan until it is golden. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer on low for fifteen minutes.

MS Walk 2010
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is dedicated to creating a world free of MS. The Greater Illinois Chapter offers a wide array of local programs and services for people with MS and their families, and is one of the top supporters of clinical research on MS. Locally, there are 15 research projects funded by the National MS Society at $3.5 million.

With more than 20,000 individuals in Illinois living with MS, each with a unique story, Walk MS 2010 brought thousands of people across Illinois together in 14 different walks on May 2, 2010. Overall, Walk MS 2010 has raised $2,193,177 of their $2,650,000 goal, with the final walk scheduled to take place in Peoria on September 12.

As part of our commitment to the local community, Ace Hardware of Central Illinois was proud to be part of the event by donating bottled water for the walkers to enjoy. In order to help raise money for MS, all 10 store locations sold MS Shoes for $1. With the help of our customers, we were able to help the Greater Illinois Chapter raise money to go towards MS research. We would like to extend our gratitude for your contributions.
