Local Ace History
Your local Ace has been family-owned since 1943 when it opened as Hill Hardware owned by Ed Hill, his wife, and his brother Joe. The company was bought out in 1951 by Robert Bishop and the store name was changed to Bishop Hardware. In 1955 George T. Preckwinkle bought half-interest and the store was moved to the current Walnut location in Springfield. In 1961, when Robert Bishop moved to Florida, George T. and wife Rosalie formed a corporation and purchased Mr. Bishop's interest.

During the next two decades the corporation opened four more stores in Jacksonville, Taylorville, Springfield, and Normal. In the 1980s, George T. and Rosalie Preckwinkle's children, George W. Preckwinkle and Lucy E. Bagot, along with a very qualified team, took over the operations full time.

Since George W. and Lucy have operated the company, six more stores have been added to Bishop Hardware and Supply, Incorporated: Pekin, Havana, Carlinville, Lincoln, Chatham, and Hillsboro. Unfortunately, the Pekin location saw continuing losses and was closed in 1997.

Today, Bishop Hardware operates 10 different Ace locations to conveniently serve Central Illinois and looks forward to what the future holds. For 67 years we have been striving to provide excellent customer service. Thank you to all of our loyal customers who have made our endeavors such a success. We truly appreciate your patronage--without you we would not be where we are today.

Composting 101
If you have never considered composting before, you should. Not only is composting environmentally friendly since it keeps up to 30% of waste out of landfills, but it is cheap and your landscape loves it.

As you begin your project, you will need to decide how you want to compost. You can either create a hidden compost pile in your backyard, build a compost bin, or purchase a bin. Once you've decided how you want to compost, you are ready to start collecting your materials.

Items you can compost include:
*Grass clippings, leaves, wood chips and other yard waste
 *Eggshells
 *Coffee grounds and tea bags
 *Broken down cardboard boxes
 *Newspapers and white printer paper

Note that you should not add too much of any one type of material, as this can throw off the pH balance of your compost.

Items you cannot compost include:
 *Pet excretement
 *Meat, bones and greasy foods
 *Dairy products
 *Seafood
*Citrus Peels, Eucalyptus leave, pine needles
*Plants treated with insecticides or herbicides
 *Weeds

Dandelion Removal
Although dandelions can be beneficial to the ecosystem and your health, many people want weed-free lawns. Dandelions are strong weeds, though, and can be difficult to get rid of completely. To make sure the plant does not grow back, you need to make sure you remove the entire tap root (which can be up to 2-3 feet deep). Typically, pulling the weed will not remove the entire root system, unless the dandelion is a small seedling. For more established plants you will need to use a pulling tool or a weed killer for lawns

Once you get rid of the entire plant you will want to make sure new dandelions do not start taking root in your yard. Do this by applying a weed and feed product in the spring, followed by a weed killer spray if seedlings sprout. If you catch new dandelions early enough, you can always carefully pull them by hand, making sure to get the entire root.

Another way to keep dandelions and other weeds from growing is by maintaining a thick lawn. A thick lawn can crowd out weed seedlings and halt new growth. To keep your lawn thick and healthy overseed and cut your lawn at a minimum height of 2 inches. Mowing your lawn any shorter can promote weed growth.

CAIBA Shred Event
On behalf of CAIBA we would like to thank everybody who came out to Ace April 20th and donated food to the Salvation Army while having unwanted documents shredded for free by Affordable Shred.

We would also like to thank everybody for your patience as you moved through the line, and a big thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the day a success.

With everybody's help, the event was able to collect 2,297 food items and $367 in cash donations for the Salvation Army. By the end of the event, approximately 15,000 pounds of documents were shredded!

Memorial Day Thanks
With Memorial Day quickly approaching on Monday, May 31st, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the men and women, along with their families, who have served our country and given their lives to protect our freedom.
