Weatherproofing your Home
|
The average house-even when well-insulated-contains cracks and gaps between building materials that add up to a hole about 14 inches square (see image below). In the winter, those gaps may make the house drafty and chilly. All year long, a leaky house not only wastes energy but can lead to water damage and provide a path for insects.

October is National Fire Prevention Month
From smoke alarms to fire extinguishers we have what you need at ACE. Do you have a fire safety plan in place? See below for some suggestions:
Smoke Alarms and Smoke Detectors
One of the most important fire safety devices for the home is the smoke alarm or smoke detector. After becoming generally available in the early 1970's home smoke alarm sales grew rapidly, so that by 1991, 88% of US homes had at least one smoke detector in operation.
Several studies have concluded that when working smoke alarms are present, the chance of dying from the fire is cut in half. The smoke detectors currently in place have saved thousands of lives, but several problems exist. First, the 12% of homes without alarms have more than half of the fires; second, it is estimated that a third of the smoke alarms in place are not working, often due to failure to replace a worn out battery; and third, many homes do not have as many smoke alarms as are needed to protect the occupants properly.
Visit your local Ace Hardware for a complete line of Smoke & Fire Alarms.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Detectors
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the number one cause of poisoning death in America. It is an odorless, invisible, and extremely dangerous gas, which can be given off by the most common appliances in your home or even a car in an attached garage. You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes. Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal is burned. When appliances that burn fuel are maintained and properly used, the amount of CO produced is usually not hazardous. However, if appliances are not working properly or are used incorrectly, dangerous levels of CO can result. Hundreds of people die accidentally every year from CO poisoning caused by malfunctioning or improperly used fuel-burning appliances. Even more die from CO produced by idling cars. First Alert Carbon Monoxide Alarms and First Alert Carbon Monoxide Detectors help you identify when there is a problem so you can quickly evacuate your home.
