                   Fall Fertilizers

This is an important time of the year for your lawn, and Fall Fertilizer will help your lawn make it through the winter and start off next spring on the right foot.

When to apply fall fertilizer

Late fall fertilizing is a crucial last step in lawn care programs north of the transition zone. Although the exact timing can vary due to weather conditions, the final fertilizer application should be made sometime in November - when the grass stops growing or slows down to the pint of not needing to be mowed, but before the ground freezes.

Proper timing is essential. If fertilizer is applied too early, while grass is actively growing, it can invite winter injury and snow mold. Do not apply fertilizer to frozen soil or over snow or ice.

Why is fertilizing in the late fall important?

Cool season grasses recover from summer stresses like drought, heat, and disease in the fall. If the lawn is not hungry and has been properly fertilized in the late summer, grass can begin to store carbohydrate reserves in the stems, rhizomes, and stolons. Carbohydrate reserves help grass resist winter injury and disease, and serve as a source of energy for root and shoot growth the following spring. A late fall fertilization will also provide better winter color, enhanced spring green up, and increased rooting

Here are just a couple of our products for your Fall Fertilizing needs. Stop by your local Ace Hardware and let us help you decide on the proper Fall Fertilizer for your lawn.

Do you know what time of the year it is?

                         It's Furnace Filter Time!

Dust bunnies are multiplying, dog hair is piling up, and bird feathers are flying—oh my, it must be the furnace filter!

To change a furnace filter is perhaps the quickest and easiest way to maximize the efficiency of your heating system—and to help purify your home’s air.

Basic furnace filters are designed to trap dust, dirt, and airborne particulates before they can get into the system and potentially damage the fan or the heating coil. More expensive filters perform the same role, plus they can enhance the air quality in your home by trapping bacteria, pollen, and mildew and mold spores. Since most of the air in your house circulates through your HVAC system, furnace filters are your first line of defense against dust and airborne allergens.

So how do you know when it’s time to change a furnace filter? Here are some general guidelines—although, as always, it is a good idea to check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.

Typically you should change a basic, fiberglass or paper furnace filter every one to two months. And you should change or clean an electrostatic or HEPA filter every two to four months if…

- you have one or more furry pets
- you notice excessive to moderate dust buildup in your house
- one or more people in your home smoke
- your heating system fan runs most of the time
- you open your doors and windows frequently
- if you notice dust or dirt buildup on your current filter

Check your furnace filter size (the size is marked on the side of most furnace filters) and come into your local Ace Hardware where we have a huge selection to choose from.

           JR's Plant of the Month

We are showcasing the Fall Bulb assortment in October. We have several types of each bulb to choose from, Crocus, Hyacinths, Narcissus, Tulips and Daffodils.

Special 1@ $2.99ea  or 4 for $10.00

                         Tips for Planting Bulbs

Plant the pointy end up. That's about all you need to know. It's easy to spot the pointy end of a tulip; tougher with a crocus. But in most cases, even if you don't get it right, the flower bulb will still find its way topside.
Plant big bulbs about 8" deep and small bulbs about 5" deep.

No fertilizer is necessary for the first year's bloom. Bulbs are natural storehouses of food. They don't need anything to flower the first year. For bulbs that are intended to naturalize or perennialize (return for several years) or for bulbs that are coming into their second year, spread an organic fertilizer such as compost or well-rotted cow manure, or a slow release bulb food on top of the soil.

If you do fertilize, never mix fertilizer in the planting hole. It can burn the roots. Also don't follow the old adage of adding bone meal. Modern bone meal adds little nutritional value. It can also encourage pests and even dogs to dig up your bulbs looking for bones!
