Things to do on Maui
BIKE HALEAKALA!
Maui's Haleakala National Park is a must see during any visit.
An extremely winding but well maintained road leads up the mountain. The summit area includes the crater the summit of the volcano. There is a visitor center, with parking and restrooms, near the summit. At the summit itself is another parking lot and a simple observatory without facilities.
The main feature of this part of the park is the famous Haleakalā Crater. It is huge: 6.99 miles (11.25 km) across, 2.0mi (3.2 km) wide, and some 2,600 ft (790 m) deep. The interior of the crater is dotted by numerous volcanic features, including large cinder cones. Two main trails lead into the crater from the summit area: the Halemau'u and Sliding Sands trails. Hikers in the crater can stay in one of three cabins (which need to be reserved through the park first).
Each morning, visitors come to the summit of the volcano to watch the spectacular sunrise. More visitors come each afternoon to watch the equally amazing sunset. In either case conditions can be extremely cold.
The park is known for its unique volcanic features, its long scenic drive with numerous overlooks, and the unusually clear views of the night sky available. Haleakalā is one of the best places in the United States for amateur astronomy, and binoculars and telescopes are available for rent from many local merchants. Nēnē (Hawaiian Geese, Branta sandvicensis) can also be seen in their natural habitat in Haleakalā Crater. Although nēnē died out entirely in the park, in 1946 they were re-introduced with the help of the Boy Scouts who carried young birds into the crater in their backpacks.
When you visit the park we encourage you to stop at the Kula Lodge for a meal or just drinks. The view is spectacular and the food is good.
One of the best ways to experience the volcano is to bike down ithe main road, which almost all downhill. There are several companies that will rent you a bike and take you up to the top. There are two main types or rentals available. The first is with a guide and you go down the road with the guide. The other is free style, they take you up to the top and then you bike down to their shop and turn the bikes back in on your own schedule.

It is hard to find decent food for affordable prices on Maui, but this new restaurant achieves that goal in a great location with great decor. We have been pleased with all meals we have had here.
