Foxtail Season Is Upon Us!
Foxtail grass can be very dangerous for your pets. These obnoxious grasses shed seeds which can bury themselves into the soft tissues of paws, nostrils, eyes, and more! Once a foxtail is lodged into the tissue, it does not back itself out. In fact, it continues to migrate further into the opening. Here, are some common signs that your pet may have an embedded foxtail ..
- Nose: Sneezing, may be accompanied with blood. Pawing at the nose.
- Mouth: Coughing, gagging, eating grass.
- Paw: Raised red bump, may seem like an abscess. Painful to walk on. Excessive licking of the area.
- Ear: Shaking of the head. Walking with a head tilt.
- Eye: Most common site in cats. Tearing or mucus discharge. Pawing at the eye.
Be sure to take extra precaution when walking your pets near foxtail grass. Always check your pet thoroughly after being exposed to foxtails. If you suspect your pet may have an embedded foxtail seed, contact your veterinarian right away. The quicker you get help, the lower the risk of undergoing a costly removal process.
