"What's New?"
BakingTech Keynote Speaker - Urban Meyer: Head Coach, Ohio State University

Urban Meyer will be speaking during the Opening General Session of BakingTech on Monday, March 4.

Urban Meyer made history in his first season as Ohio State coach, guiding the Scarlet and Gray to only the sixth undefeated and untied season in school history with a 12-0 record and also to a Big Ten Conference Leaders Division championship.  He was named a finalist for three national Coach of the Year Awards - the FWAA's Eddie Robinson Award, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award and the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award - for his (and his staff's) efforts to turn a team that had no chance at a post-season into an Associated Press Top 3 team.

Meyer and staff built this unbeaten team that led the Big Ten in scoring and ranked second in rushing by convincing the players the most important thing they could do was win the next game; practice hard, prepare well and simply find ways to win, and by winning the team would realize its 2012 rewards.   And by winning it would honor a senior class that included 13 scholarship players who could have left and played for any bowl-eligible team in the country.

Win is what Meyer's Ohio State team did.  It won dominantly: 63-38 over Leaders Division champ Nebraska; 52-22 over Illinois and 56-10 over Miami.  It won close: 17-16 at No. 20 Michigan State.  It won by good fortune: 29-22 in overtime over Purdue behind backup quarterback Kenny Guiton.  It won ugly: 52-49 at Indiana after leading 52-34 with less than seven minutes to play.  And it won the big one...three of them, in fact: 35-23 at Penn State; 21-14 in overtime at Wisconsin; and 26-21 over Michigan.

Urban Meyer, who is 48, will work his 27th season as a collegiate coach in 2013.

BakingTech Schedule Changes

Sunday Officer's Reception Moved to Tuesday Evening:

The Officer's Reception, which has been held Sunday evening, has been moved to Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm, following the third session of MarketPlace: 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.  Post conference surveys showed that attendees felt that the Sunday night reception made it difficult to schedule dinners and other networking events at the start of the meeting since the reception did not conclude until 8:00 pm.

Wednesday Morning Closing Session Eliminated:

Time is everyone's most precious commodity.  For the past several years, conference attendees have requested that the meeting be tightened-up so that it required less time away from work and family.  Historically, the General Session attendance drops dramatically from 850-900 on Monday morning to less than 150 on Wednesday morning.  Attempts to keep attendees at the meeting with captivating panels and keynote speakers have not been successful.  It is clear that the vast majority of attendees already depart Wednesday morning.  Therefore, the Wednesday morning session has been eliminated and the final keynote speaker and the introduction of new Officers have been moved to Tuesday afternoon.

Three Days of MarketPlace:

BakingTech's MarketPlace, with over 200 exhibitors, will be held from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  The traditional TableTop displays provide an even playing field for our Allied Members and promote the development of networking contacts.  Be sure to attend all three days to take advantage of having all of your important business contacts in one place at one time.

Exhibitors: Please note that space is being reserved at a record pace and we fully anticipate selling out again this year.

Young Professional Events During BakingTech:

The ASB Young Professionals Committee, chaired by Morgan Murphy, has planned networking and educational events at BakingTech for ASB members who are 40 years old and younger.

On Sunday, March 3 from 7:30-9:30 pm, join the young professionals for a night of networking, appetizers, drinks, and bowling!  This event will take place at Lucky Strikes Bowling Lanes and will be a great opportunity for young professionals to expand personal and professional networks!

On Monday, March 4 from 1:00-3:00 pm, join us for the Young Professionals Panel Discussion with Industry Leaders.  Discussion will relate to career paths, lessons learned by industry leaders, and advice for young professionals in the field.  The panel will consist of four industry leaders.  Confirmed panel participants include Theresa Cogswell, from BakerCogs, Inc. and Rowdy Brixey, from Bimbo Bakeries USA.  This will be an interesting and educational event that students and young professionals are encouraged to attend!
New Logo

A special thank you to Tom and Trish McCurry for their help in designing the new ASB logo.  Following numerous designs, revisions and reviews, the Board of Directors has approved the new ASB Logo.  There will be some carry-over of the old logo seen during BakingTech, but the new logo will be fully implemented by April.

Board of Director Actions

In addition to approving the above logo, the Board discussed and took action on the following items during its monthly conference call on January 23:
  • Approval of the creation of an Affiliate Chapter relationship with ASSOCOM INDIA.
  • Approval to proceed with the creation of a Product Development Competition which will be open to the entire baking industry and introduced during BakingTech 2014.
  • Review of a proposal for an industry association supported research study on "The Skills Gap in U.S. Commercial Baking: Trends, Challenges & Solutions."
Wholesale Baker Postcard Campaign

In late November, as part of the new baker recruitment effort, ASB mailed you 2 "Wholesale Baker" membership applications in the form of postcards.  We encouraged you to distribute these free memberships ($185 value) as gifts to your baker clients and/or colleagues who are employed by wholesale bakeries.

Since receiving the first completed postcard on December 11th, in just over a month and a half we have welcomed 57 new Baker members into the ASB community through the postcard campaign.  This is in addition to the 49 bakers who completed the "Free First Year Membership For Bakery Employees" application, which is available for download on our website

A number of these new members have registered for BakingTech, so be sure to say hello and introduce yourself!

Quote: Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings us, but by the attitude we bring to life.  A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes.  It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results. -Anon

Quip: We go through our careers thinking that we are exactly where we wanted to go, but so often what we "want" is a far cry from what we "need" to be doing.  Always look around and check your progress and determine if you are doing the right things, not always right for you, but right for the world and those around you.  As we start the beginning of this New Year, take a few minutes to reflect on your wants and needs.  We are now just over a month from BakingTech; Best Week in Baking.  What the Society NEEDS is for all of you to make the annual meeting in March, as you will be provided with content that will help you plan out your needs for the coming years.  I look forward to seeing you there.
