ASB Promoting Baking as a Career

The Board of Directors has identified the lack of skilled labor as one of the major challenges facing the baking industry in the near future.  This year, ASB and ABA will be funding and managing a study to quantify the pending labor shortage and more importantly, identify the strategies to address it.

A contributing factor in the lack of skilled labor is that baking is not seen as a desirable career choice for many young people.  ASB is already addressing this problem by providing $20,000 in annual scholarships to students in Kansas State University's Baking and Milling Science program, free ASB memberships to students and complimentary student registrations to BakingTech.

ASB members will soon be receiving a poster developed by ASB's Young Professionals Committee that highlights education, jobs, and salaries in the baking industry.  Awareness of the career opportunities in the baking industry is the first small step in addressing the shortage of skilled labor.  We encourage you to hang this poster in your employee common areas or give it to your local high school, vocational school, and community college guidance counselors for them to post in their facilities.  Thank you for your help.

 Feedback- Breakfast of Champions

Ken Blanchard, the author of many books on leadership, states that "Feedback is the Breakfast of Champion."  It is impossible for individuals or organizations to fully understand the impact of their decisions and actions without honest feedback.  Throughout the year, ASB's Board of Directors and staff debate and decide about changes to ASB's programs and policies that have a direct impact on you as members.  Your direct feedback is vital to the success of ASB and it is sought and valued by the Board.  Surveys are one way in which ASB's leadership seeks feedback on major issues such as a potential summer meeting or topics and speakers for next year's BakingTech.  Please participate in these surveys so that your views become part of the data upon which the decisions are being made.  You are also invited to send your comments directly to the staff and the Board through emails or phone calls.  Contact information for the ASB leadership is available on the website.
 Young Professionals Webinar
