Joseph R. Liss has been in the baking industry for more than 70 years.  He was the youngest of 8 children.  His father was a flour broker and his 4 brothers owned retail bakeries in Philadelphia and New Jersey under the Liss Bakery name.  As a teenager, Joe worked for his brothers making deliveries and doing their accounting work.  Shortly after graduating Temple University, Joe purchased Michel's Bakery - a single unit retail bakery in Philadelphia. 

At Michel's Bakery, Joe met his wife-to-be Betty, who managed the office.  Together they began an exciting and successful career working side by side for more than 60 years.  They entered the wholesale business purchasing the Wassell Pie Company from Mrs. Smith's Pies where they made cakes and pastries for foodservice route distributors on the east coast.  Next, they purchased Rhea's Bakery in Pittsburgh, PA expanding that operation to 7 retail stores and 25+ supermarket in-store bakeries before selling to a family investor.  Next they purchased New Standard Baking Company, a manufacturer of private label supermarket cakes.  In 1983, they purchased the fresh route distribution operations and production plants of Mrs. Smith's Pie Company. 

Joe also partnered with Ludwig Goldschmidt in the LuJoe Company to buy and sell used bakery equipment.  In 1988, Joe consolidated his bakery operations into a new facility in Philadelphia.  Today Michel's Bakery is a major private label bakery supplying supermarkets and foodservice accounts with cakes, pastries, pies, muffins and brownies. 

Throughout their careers Joe and Betty have helped many people in the baking industry.  They have donated to many charitable causes, never hesitating to help others and never looking for recognition.

In honor of Joseph R. Liss' 95th birthday, Bundy Baking Solutions has given a very generous donation to the Baker's National Education Fund (BNEF).  The Baker’s National Education Foundation has been supplying scholarships and education to the baking industry for 50 years.  The BNEF is dedicated to providing financial support to train bakers and allied personnel for today and into the future.
