What Goes Around? Most Common Springtime Illnesses

Spring is here and so are allergies. In fact, most things that go around this time of year are allergies and allergy-related problems. Here is a guide to understanding springtime allergic conditions, how to recognize them, how to treat them with over-the-counter medicines, how to prevent them, and when to seek the advice of your doctor.

flowers

The reason for the spike in allergy flare ups in spring is because all the trees and plants are blooming, and pollen from the flowers get carried by the wind, and end up in our nose, eyes, and lungs. Immune cells in these body tissues react to the pollen and release histamine, a chemical that causes fluids to leak out of our bloodstream and into the tissues. In the nose, this results in swelling and mucus production. In the eyes, this causes redness and tearing. In the lungs, this triggers swelling, wheezing, and mucus production. Histamine is also responsible for the itching that occurs in the eyes, nose and throat.

 Treating Insect Bites

You are giving your child a bath and notice several bumps that weren't there earlier that day.
They are scattered throughout the legs, but nothing is present on the upper body. She seems to have been scratching them. What could they be? The most common cause of such spots is insect bites. Here is our
guide to treating insect bites. Almost everyone has experienced insect bites, so it is no mystery what they look like. The main issue with insect bites is to treat the itching and to prevent infection.

  • Itching:  This can be treated with a variety of over the counter itch-stopping products applied directly to the bite. Be careful, these can sting if the bite has been scratched open. Calamine lotion or anti-itch cream with calamine can be very effective for itching, but be aware that if placed on a bite that has been scratched open, it may increase the chance of scarring. In order to avoid overdose, do not use oral anti-itch products at the same time.

Organic on a Budget in 9 Simple Steps

fruits and vegetables

It’s a frustrating fact that dollar for dollar, it’s more expensive to buy an organic apple versus one that’s been sprayed with pesticides. This is a double-edged sword as we now know we should be consuming 9-13 fist sized servings of fresh produce, and that it should of course be as far from chemical-laden as possible.

With so many of us on a budget, how do we feed our families the very best on a shoestring? Rather than buying skids of Mr. Noodles or Kraft Dinner to get by, I hope the tips below help your family to enjoy some extra pocket money without compromising a life of vibrant longevity!

  •  Create a menu for the week. It does take time. We need to begin seriously prioritizing food preparation into our lives. Museums and other attractions are often packed on weekends anyway –as a family why not avoid that hustle and bustle and devote one day on the weekend to menu and food prep? Get the kids involved as much as possible and make it fun!

      The Importance of Mum-Time

      mom and child

A study by the Pew Research Center reveals that more moms are staying at home to care for their children.

NPR reports, “After decades on the decline, the number of ‘stay at home’ moms in the U.S. has risen, with 29 percent of women with children under 18 saying they don't work outside the home . . . up from 23% in 1999.” While immigrant moms, young moms, and those with a high-school education or less are most likely to forego work outside the home, some mothers also say the bleak economy has made the decision for them. The study notes that 60% of Americans believe that “children are better off with a parent home.”
