AAP Recommends Parents Limit Screen Time

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated their policy statement on daily media consumption for children.

On average, children ages 8-10 years old spend approximately 8 hours per day in front of a screen.  That makes screen time the second leading activity for children behind sleeping.

The AAP is asking parents to decrease their children's amount of screen time down to two hours per day. If a child is between the ages of 0-2, they recommend that screen time should be completely eliminated.  In recent studies, excessive screen time has been associated with an increase in childhood obesity, sleeping problems, aggression, and trouble at school.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests parents create a media usage plan and implement it in their household.  TVs and computers should not be in children's rooms because the media usage cannot be monitored.  For more information on this study visit USA Today.

Exchange those hours of sitting in front of the tv or computer for activities that the whole family can enjoy.  Lead by example and participate in an activity with your children.  Examples include: dancing to the radio, playing hide and seek, playing tag outside or building a snowman.  Read

Understand the 6 Keys to the Common Cold

It is that time of year where the ah-choos and sniffles tend to be more frequent.  You'll want to know this important information when family members catch a cold.

1. Viruses cause colds and coughs. Virtually all colds start off as a common cold virus. Whether or not your child has a fever, green nose, junky cough, or is throwing up mucus, the first several days of any cough and cold is usually due to a cold virus, not a bacteria.

2. Viruses are not treatable with antibiotics. Antibiotics will only treat the bacterial complications of colds and cough, such as pneumonia, sinus infection, and ear infection. They won’t help the basic cough and runny nose associated with a cold virus.

Don't Forget to Winterize Your Child's Skin

Dry air and sensitive skin is a recipe for a rashy winter. Once you turn the heat on, expect skin irritations to go up. Here’s what happens; the low humidity of central heating dries the skin, dry skin gets flaky and itches, and the child scratches the itchy skin, further irritating the rash, and the cycle continues. Winterizing your child’s skin, in a nutshell, is what you put onto and into it. So don't forget to winterize!
