Halloween Safety
Halloween can be a fun time for children and parents alike, but safety during this time is very important. Children are twice as likely to be struck by a car on Halloween than any other time. Follow these simple safety tips from Dr. Jim Sears to keep your family safe this Halloween.

Travel in Numbers

Never let your child go out alone trick-or-treating. Adult supervision is advised for younger children and large groups are suggested for older children.

Halloween Costumes

Try to avoid having your children wear masks and opt for face make-up instead. Masks often do not fit well and decrease how much your children are able to see. Face make-up is a great alternative, but be sure to test a small area of skin to make sure that your child will not have any type of reaction. Try to avoid baggy, lose-fitting clothes to reduce the possibility of tripping. Applying reflective tape to your child’s costume will help them be more visible to vehicles. Always...

New DHA Breast Milk Test
A new test measures the level of the brain-building fat DHA in breast milk. OmegaQuant’s Mother’s Milk DHA test is easy to do and requires only one drop of breast milk. We use this in our pediatric practice as a way of encouraging breastfeeding moms to be sure they eat enough omega-3 fats (Dr. Bill’s prescription: 6 ounces of wild salmon twice a week). The optimal building of baby’s brain, eyes and nervous system depends on having sufficient building blocks from mom’s milk. DHA is one of these important building blocks.  Learn More
"Sugar Bugs" and Toddler Dental Health
With Halloween fast approaching, it made me think about a recent encounter I had with a child and her parent in our office. Parents are constantly worried about their child's dental health, and rightly so. This parent was telling me, "Doctor I just can't seem to give my child anything other than juice in her sippy cup. She refuses to go to sleep without a bottle full of juice and I know this is ruining her teeth." This three year old had several cavities that her dentist had rightly attributed to sucking on a sippy cup or bottle full of juice all day long. The mother lamented, "She refuses to drink only water!"

I sized up the situation and thought of a good answer. I squatted down to the child's eye level and said, "Juice, candy and other foods can have lots of sugar. When we eat or drink too much sugar, tiny little sugar bugs can grow on our teeth and give us cavities." The little girl was astonished that she had been feeding these "sugar bugs" on her teeth with the juice from her sippy cup. Learn if Dr. Pete's solution  helped this little girl.
Throw A Party!
As an alternative to street-roaming, we sometimes would throw a Halloween garage party when our children were teens. Many kids ago, we learned the best way to keep our children safe and monitor what goes into their little minds and bodies on Halloween night was to chaperone a garage party at our house. Every year was a different theme and some years we would project a scary movie against a sheet, create a scavenger hunt in the house or play different types of games. The key is to keep them entertained so they are not bored and go looking for more "tricks" than "treats."
