St. Louis Audi Club Newsletter
August

Presidential Notes:

As we head into the heat of a St. Louis summer, club activities have slowed, but not stopped.

Coming up next week, we'll get together at the Civil Life Brewing Company (in their Beer Garden, weather permitting) in South St. Louis city for our bimonthly social night.  I really enjoy the atmosphere, beer, food and staff at Civil Life and hope you will enjoy it, too

St. Louis Metro Cars & Coffee will take place this month on Saturday, August 17th at Starbucks in Rock Hill.  This event is growing every month, and with 156 cars in July, C&C now outpaces many local car shows in quantity and quality.  According to M L Hillard, president of the St. Louis BMW club and prime motivator behind C&C, "From older MG's getting ready for restoration, sitting next to a Ferrari, with everything else in between---everyone just mingled and most stayed on way past 10:15. Add to that 4 Tesla's out for the day, and a large crowd --whole Saturday morning was great".  If you haven't made it out yet, be sure to come by this month.

Several club members have been participating in the SCCA's PDX program this summer and have good things to say about the generous track time and reasonable cost.  If you need a quick track fix, the SCCA's Wednesday afternoon PDX may be for you.

We all know how important it is to properly train young drivers to survive today's driving envrionment.  Tire Rack's Street Survival Program is the preeminent program attempting to do just this.  We, as auto enthusiasts, can make a difference, or maybe even save a teen's life, by participating in this program.  Although our chapter is too small to put on our own teen clinic, you can help the local SCCA and BMW Clubs in this important program by volunteering as instructors or helpers.

The SCCA will run two clinics in August and September.  If you can volunteer, contact Carla Russo at grail_girl@yahoo.com or (314) 616-6313.

The St. Louis BMWCCA will also host a school in early September.  To volunteer, contact Brian Schlueter at brian.d.schlueter@gmail.com or (314) 808-2932.

Registration for students for all three schools is open now at streetsurvival.org/school-schedule-registration/.

Looking ahead, registration is open for the ACNA's Frank Beddor Nationals in Nashville the first week of October and for the Autos on Valhalla car show on October 6th.  Information about both can be found below.

Don't forget - Audi Club is giving a 2014 S4 away this year.  To buy raffle tickets, contact any board member or Download the Raffle Form.

Although we don't have many activities scheduled for the month of August, the months following will be busy.  I look forward to seeing you at club events soon.

Street Survival Teen Driving School
August 24th

Family Arena 2002 Arena Pkwy  St Charles, MO

Tire Rack Street Survival goes beyond antiquated high-school driver education programs, which put more focus on classroom theory and parallel parking rather than controlling a two-ton vehicle at speed.

The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survival program is a “hands-on” driving experience in real-world situations! We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them.

The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts, and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts, too.

It’s about more than driving – it’s about living!

The Tire Rack Street Survival school is a safe teen program designed to go beyond today’s required driver’s education and give teens across the U.S. the driving tools and hands-on experience to become safer, smarter drivers. Trained and qualified in-car driving instructors as well as classroom experience for each student.

If you can volunteer, contact Carla Russo at grail_girl@yahoo.com or (314) 616-6313.

Registration for students for all Street Survival schools is open now at streetsurvival.org/school-schedule-registration/.

  • And More...

Since we last spoke....

The pace of club activities eased during the month of July.  Still the few events we hosted were a lot of fun.

Early in the month, our General Membership Meeting was held at Pole Position Raceway.  After a short business meeting, those in attendance adjourned to Pole Position's go-kart track for a pair of races.  The format of these races were quite different than their normal open races.

The first was a qualifying race to set our starting positions for the second race.  For the second race, we were gridded on the track Formula 1-style with the race beginnng from a standing start.  I had a great time and do plan to visit Pole Position again soon.  I'll bet I'll see more than a few of you there, too.

Later, twelve club members and friends and family visited Top Gun Shooting Sports for an evening of target practice.  After having a great time and expending quite a few rounds of ammo from weapons of all kinds, we moved on to a local ice cream stand to enjoy some tasty treats on a warm July evening.

July's Car's & Coffee was another great success even with an early rain in the area.  156 cars, and their drivers, showed up for this growing get-together.  I heard several first-time participants comment on the variety and quality of the cars in Starbuck's parking lot.

Cars on display included Audis, Porsches, Ferraris, a bevy of British sports cars, BMWs. Nissans, Mustangs, Teslas, several microcars  and an old firetruck.....  If you haven't taken the time to visit Cars & Coffee, you've got to add it to your list of things to do on Saturday morning.

I'm looking forward to a very busy season this fall, but this has also been a great Audi Club summer.
