St. Louis Audi Club Newsletter
July 2014

Presidential Notes:

I have to apologize to everyone.  The sheer volume of activities in which I was involved at the end of May and beginning of June did not allow time to produce an Audi Club Newsletter for June.  This July issue includes the May event wrap up that would have been published in the June newsletter in addition to features about our June club activities.

Summer is in full swing, weather is warm to hot and summer Audi club activities are plentiful and fun.  Coming up in July and August, your Audi Club board members are hosting activities including road trip to wineries, out-of-town restaurants and car shows.  Local events include kart racing, meetings and socials at great local eateries.  Cars & Coffee and SCCA PDX's continue for those inclined to show or track their cars, and the first two teen driving clinics of the season will be held by the BMW Club and SCCA at the Family Arena in St. Charles.

As always, I ask you to give our club activities a try.  You don't have to be a member to participate, but you'll miss out on the great club discounts if you are not.  Anyway, come out with us anytime.

May & June Wrap Up

Audi Club Current River Float Trip - May 10
by Jerry Hogan

After leaving Fenton early on Saturday morning, we (or I) had a close call with a trooper on I-44 as we made our way to St. James, where we had a great country style breakfast.

From St. James, we drove to Salem on Missouri highways 68 and
19, two of the state's great curvy highways. As we neared the Salem, a heavy fog was hanging over ther river valley.  As left Salem and got closer to Akers Ferry, the fog burned off leaving great weather for the rest of the day.

Once the float got started, we basically had the river to ourselves.  We only encountered one group of kayakers camping riverside and another group with two canoes on the river. As usual, the Current River moved swiftly making our ten mile float a nice, easy adventure.
Along the way, we ate a picnic lunch on the riverbank and visited the spring and cave near the halfway point of our trip.  Pam got me out of trouble when I took a wrong chute and got stuck on a gravel bar at one of the many rapis on the Current.

We arrived at Pulltite at about 2:00 pm and while some of us wanted to go futher, the folks at Akers Ferry Canoe Rental said it was too late to go another 10 miles to the next landing point. All in all, it was a very enjoyable day. Don't miss the next one.

Audi Club Membership Meeting - May 13

The Wildwood Pub & Grill off Old State Road in Wildwood was to the location for our May board and membership meeting.  The food was good and the accomodations were some of the best we've recently experienced for meetings.

During the meeting, we discussed ACNA's growth plan, the new national affiliation with Hooked on Driving and the upcoming 30th Anniversary National event in Austin, TX, being held September 17th thru 22nd.

We also discussed completed events including the A3 Launch Parties, Cars & Coffee and the Current River float trip, in addition to upcoming events; St. Louis European Auto Show, The EAS Grand Prix, SCCA PDX's and the June Social at Urban Chestnut Brewery & Bierhall.

We try to hold our meetings at great bars and restaurants all around the St. Louis area and all meetings are open to all members.  Feel free to join us for our next meeting in July.

Cars & Coffee - May 17 & June 21

The second and third Cars & Coffees of the 2014 Season was held at Starbucks in Rock Hill on the mornings of Saturday, May 17th
and June 21st and, like the April event before them, based on the number of cars in attendance, were a huge success.

The sheer size of this event had begun to cause problems with the merchants at the Market at McKnight, the shopping center we have been using since the inception of this event.  To resolve these issues, we had to implement new rules in May and June.  Basically, we are now leaving open the first four parking spaces on every row closest to the storses on the south side of the lot.  These spots are
left open for the use of the merchants and their customers.   Additionally, parking is not allowed in any handicapped or employee of the month spot.

In June, Ted Richardson rallied members of the forum and internet Audi groups which resulted in a huge number of Audis in attendance.  Hopefully, some of these Audi fans will soon become Audi Club NA members.

The next Cars & Coffee will be held on July 19th.  Be sure to bring your Quattro out.  Also watch our newsletters and the St Louis Metro Cars & Coffee Facebook pages for upcoiming changes to this event.

St. Louis European Auto Show - June 1

The 27th annual
St. Louis European Auto Show was agein held at Plaza Frontenac on Sunday, June 1st.  Once again, owners of
some of the finest European cars in the midwest showed up in support of the kids at Shriners Hospital - St. Louis, and once again, over $25,000 was raised for this
The Hogan Clan proudly displays their Audis
deserving group.

As a Car Club Sponsor, the St. Louis Audi Club erected our tent and welcomed guests for conversation and refreshments.  Many members showed their cars alondside those of the show's resenting sponsor, West County Audi.  The weather was nearly perfect at Plaza Frontenac and, even though heavy rain was reported as close as 1/2 mile away, it did not make an appearance at the show.

The St. Louis European Auto Show is a major highlight of our club's annual calendar and is not to be missed.  If you are available on the first Sunday of June next year, come on out, or better yet, register and participate.  You won't be sorry!

Historic Fort de Chartres Annual Rendezvous Drivng Tour - June 8
by Larry Stoneman

On Sunday, June 8, the Audi Chapter of St. Louis hosted a chance to go back into the 1700s. Beginning with a scenic drive through the lower flood plain farming communities of Prairie du Rocher, Illinois, the drive ended with a visit to the oldest, standing French stone fort in Illinois—Fort de Chartres. Situated on the Mississippi, the fort was built by the French in 1740, the first seat of
governance, and then turned over to the British after the end of the French and Indian war.

The Annual Rendezvous event is held every first weekend in June. The 2 day event provides authentic demonstrations and glimpses into the dress, living implements, military uniforms, native Indian costumes, trappers and mountain men from the period of 1740-1840 when the fort was the center for trade and commerce in Illinois.

Each day on a specific hour, the visitors are provided with the spectacle of a period uniformed French marine drum and fife corps

marching through the fort gates into the inner quadrangle. The commanding French officer of the corps recites the French pledge of allegiance to the crown, followed by the firing salute of eight muskets. But the real surprise every hour is the firing of the 4-pound brass cannon by the French artillery corps.

Audi Club Social - Urban Chestnut Brewery and Bierhall - June 10

Club members met at the brand new Urban Chestnut Brewery and Bierhall in the Grove neighborhood for the club's June social.  This

new German-style bierhall opened in February to rave reviews.  With long picinic-style tables, smart-phone enabled tours, a great gift shop and great food matched to the taste of their unique brews, Urban Chestnut has a winner in this new facility.

I have heard from several of my friends in other St. Louis car clubs that the Audi Club seems to always meet at the best places around.  I tend to agree.  We will continue to search for those great locations.  If you have a favorite spot or have any suggestions for a place to meet or for a social, let me hear about it.  Contact me at president@stlaudi.com

Gateway Grizzlies Minor League Baseball Game - June 21
By Larry Stoneman

The Audi Chapter of St. Louis spent a full day hosting support for two favorite past times, cars and baseball (not always in that order).

Beginning in March each year, Cars ‘n Coffee is a venue on the third Saturday

in spring, summer and fall months, 7:45am to 9:45am, at a parking lot where +100 owners park their vehicles for the pleasure of showing off the make, year, trimline and/or level of modification of their 4-wheel wonder, visiting, bragging, talking on the “hows, whys and $$” of car fever, all the while—sipping coffee.

It’s a great time for all car lovers, and the attendance growth is impressive. The Audi Chapter of St. Louis recruited a great showing on Saturday, June 21, with multiple models of the TTRS, S4 B5 – B6 – B8 models, two S5s and a last hour arrival of a R8-V10 spyder. Two highlights were a 1930s open-wheel Bentley roadster and a McLaren.

Saturday, June 21, the Chapter hosted attendance for the minor league Gateway Grizzlies, a 12:05 pm game, after Cars ‘n Coffees, against another local minor league team, the River City Rascals. Located across the River in east Illinois, the Gateway Grizzlies are having a great year, top of their league, and the game ended in a win for the Grizzlies, 5-3. The humidity and heat kept the crowd in the shade and the close on-hand ballpark is a great venue for kids, old and young, who enjoy watching scrappy baseball.
