St. Louis Audi Club Newsletter
May
_____________________________________________

Presidential Notes:

After a big start in April, the Audi Club sort of laid back the last half of the month.  That's all about to change.

In the month of May, we will see the first St. Louis Audi Club float trip, a membership meeting, Cars & Coffee, a detailing clinic and the season-opening SCCA PDX.  We then launch into June with the St. Louis European Auto Show, the Fort de Chartres / Illinois Bluff country driving tour, a social night, 24 Hours of LeMans (hopefully including a watch party), another PDX & Cars & Coffee and even a visit to a minor league baseball game.

By the way, we have registered a team with the EAS Grand Prix, a charity event to benefit Shriner's Hospital, taking place all month long at Pole Position Raceway.  We still need two additional members to complete our team.  If you have any interest in indoor karting, and would like to see some of the money you spend for a few hours entertainment go to a worthy cause, contact me at president@stlaudiclub.com and join the team.  There is no additional cost (over Pole Position's normal rates) for you to participate.  Race at Pole Position anytime in the month of May and you could win a trophy at the St. Louis European Auto Show, all while having fun and helping the kids at Shriners Hospital.

Your board is doing a great job providing events and activities for you to attend and help spread "Audithusiasm".  Be sure to join your fellow Audi enthusiasts for some of the great events we have planned this year.  I think you'll enjoy yourself and maybe find a new friend or two.

I want to personally thank all the board members for all the work they do, I know Jerry Hogan and Pam Browning get frustrated when we cancel or move meetings, but they continue to do a great job finding locations for both our meetings and socials.  Jerry also voluntarily sits in on the national chapter conference call every month - Jerry, you have much more patience than I.  Scott Warren keeps the minutes at every meeting and will, on occasion, spell attendees names correctly.  He helps keep me on track at and between meetings.  With the begining of the car show and cars & coffee season, our newest board member and car show committee chairman, Ted Richardson, is geeting busy trying to get more of you out there to show the St. Louis car enthusiast world what Audi's are all about.  Larry Stoneman, our treasurer, keeps the books and handles the clubs taxes.  As one of the longest-serving members of the board, he is a great advisor to the newer members  He is also planning some great events for June.  Tom Trieschmann and Darren Harvey are two people I can always count on to put together an event on short notice and have hosted some of my favorite activites to date.  John Palumbo is our elder statesman, former president and one of the founders of our chapter.  John is always a great advisor and friend.  I'm also looking forward to the Christmas party he and his wife, Diane, will be hosting this winter.

Again, thanks for everything you do for the club.

Steve Warren
President

Audi Dealers 2015 AC Launch Parties - April 3

by Steve Warren
Weather played a big part in the St. Louis Audi Dealers' 2015 A3 Launch Parties.  On the evening of April 3rd, Audi dealers nationwide held launch parties for the new 2015 Audi A3.  Here in St. Louis, severe thunderstorms and even two tornados put a damper on our parties, keeping the attendance below expectations.

All three dealers put on great parties nevertheless.  West County Audi held their event at Forest Hills Country Club in Chesterfield while Plaza Audi and Parktown Audi held their parties in their respective showtimes.  All three offered refreshments and entertainment and of course special test drives of several version of the new A3.

I drove two A3 Quattro's
that evening, each with the 2.0L engine and 6-speed S-Drive dual clutch transmission, and was impressed with the experience.

Externally, this car's design strongly reflects Audi's current design ethos.  It is a good looking car and there is no doubting its Audi heritage.
This new car is about the same size as the B5 A4 (1994-2001) but unlike Audi's larger cars (including the A4), which come equipped with a longitudinally mounted engine, the A3's engine is transversly mounted.  This allows for a shorter hood and less weight ahead of the front axle.  This goodness continues to the interior where quality materials were used everywhere.  The dashboard design is simplified and reminds me more of the the TT than the larger sedans.

On the road, the A3 seems to have a split personality.  Like large Audis, the ride is supple and smooth, but the noise level seems just a little higher.  The seats are comfortable and most controls are relatively easy to find and Audi claims that the MMI interface is improved and is quite intuitive  However, I still find it to be the most frustrating aspect of all new Audis (and other German cars, too).  Please give me buttons for radio presets.  In drive, the car was glacially slow to gain speed, which will suit Prius shoppers, but didn't sit well with me.  However, put the transmission in S (which I assume is Sport) and there is a completely different car in your hands. In "S", the 220 horsepower 2.0L Turbo spooled quickly and the car rocketed down the road.

I was impressed with the new A3.  I would certainly be happy driving this car oin a daily basis, but I would check the box next to the Sport Package, which for $550, includes Front Sport Seats, Audi Drive Select and
the Three-spoke multifunction sport steering wheel with shift paddles

PCA High Performance Driver's Education - April 4-6

The weekend of April 4th - 6th saw the St. Louis Porsche Club put on another successful driving school at Gateway Motorsports  Park.  With over 100 cars registered, including several Audis and Audi Club members driving their "other" cars, the track was busy all weekend.  Over twenty first-time students experienced, first-hand, the thrill of learning to safely control their cars near the limit. In addition to the track time, these beginners also learned, in several classroom sessions, better car-control and awareness.

If you missed this school but would still like to learn about your car and your driving skills, PCA will host another school the weekend of October 10-12.  Additionally, SCCA is hosting their "PDX" afternoon driving experiences the third Wednesday of each month through September.  Watch these newsletters for more information.
