Turning Scared to Sacred

"Breathe deeply until the sweet air extinguishes the burn of fear in your lungs and every breath is a beautiful refusal to become anything less than infinite. "

Here in Seattle the epicenter, the virus is not the only impending menace.  A bigger virus is spreading : Fear.  Fear weakens the immune system when we feel like we have no control.  So yes, take precautions, this is a serious concern, but also see how your thoughts perpetuate fear.

Switch the “c”and “a” around so scared becomes sacred

SACRED

S  Stop   This is the most important step!!  Pause for just one moment. Everything follows from there. You can’t notice what is happening inside if you are racing 100 miles an hour and slowing down seems nearly impossible. However, it takes only one second to recognize that you do have a choice to turn scared to sacred within yourself.

A  Affirm   Take the time to affirm your connection to your center. Start by asking : What would help me to return to a feeling of well being?

C Connect   to your breath ! Use the breath to ground your energy. Exhale forcefully as you sigh loudly. Direct your outbreath into your feet to bring your energy down. It usually takes between 5 to 10 deep breaths to feel a shift to a more peaceful place, so keep it up.

R Reframe  Is there any way to see the situation differently, more positively? If it feels right for you, ask a higher power for help to see it from a larger perspective.

E Envision  Visualize your pet, a loving friend, a beautiful place in nature, or light from  above flooding into you. Call to mind whatever helps you connect to a feeling of safety or whatever makes you smile. As you hold that image, notice how your body begins to relax  even a little bit.

D Do  Do something creative. Take a few minutes to write in your journal, draw with color, put on music and dance or whatever moves you. This may include calling someone or taking a walk.

When scared feelings arise, any of these steps or combination will work. In challenging times, it is important to center yourself so you can be of service to others. In that light,  I am  expanding my practice to anyone who might be feeling isolated or overwhelmed and could benefit from some personalized calming techniques  and guidance.
