Boy Scouts donate new wheelchair to 5-year-old student
By Samantha Swindler | The Oregonian/OregonLive

Thanks to an attentive bus driver, a troop of Boy Scouts, and a Christmas tree lot, 5-year-old Ayden Herrera now has a new wheelchair.

Andy Cummings picks up Ayden nearly every morning as part of his bus route for Forest Grove School District. The Echo Shaw Elementary special needs student requires a wheelchair, and the one he was using was falling apart.

Boy Scouts wheelchair donation
Forest Grove-based Boy Scout Troop 213 used part of the proceeds from their Christmas tree sales to purchase a new wheelchair for 5-year-old Ayden Herrera. "The wheelchair he had, he had grown out of," Cummings said. "It was a rented, old, used wheelchair, and every time I'd pick it up or move it, it would break or fall apart... We had to remove him from the seat every time we moved him, because his chair was too bad."

But Cummings – the scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 213 – had an idea. He suggested that his scouts use part of their Christmas tree stand proceeds to buy Ayden a new, larger wheelchair.  Read the full article here.

However you slice it, everyone has played games, and games help make us who we are.

Benefit your family and Scouting with a will
A will makes a statement about what matters most in your life. By making a will, you ensure that your intentions are clearly expressed, and that they will be followed by those administering your estate. You should decide who will get your estate -- after all, you're the one that worked so hard to get it. Unfortunately, about 70% of all Americans do not make a will, and let their state decide how to distribute their assets.

After providing for family, friends, and others, many supporters of Scouting also include a meaningful gift to the Cascade Pacific Council to continue their lifetime support. Gifts in a will can be a) specific bequests of property, b) a stated dollar amount, c) a percentage of the estate, or d) a gift of the residual (what's left after all other provisions of your will have been satisfied), or e) a contingent gift (taking effect only if other will provisions cannot be satisfied). Of course, most of the charitable trusts that can be created during your lifetime can also be created in your will for the benefit of family, friends and charities.

Charitable bequests are a great way to provide for Scouting without giving up the assets during your lifetime. When the gift is distributed from your estate, your estate will receive an estate tax charitable deduction for the amount of your gift. Your gift may be a general purpose gift for Scouting or, of course, you can specify how the Council should use your gift.

It is very important that your bequest be correctly stated in your will. We are happy to provide you and your legal adviser with suggested terminology to ensure that your wishes are fulfilled. Please consider sharing your plans with your us, especially if your gift is to be used for a specific purpose by the council. This information will be confidential (unless you specify otherwise) and you will have the assurance that the use of your gift will be understood and agreed to by the Cascade Pacific Council.

Also, if you share your plans with us, we will have the opportunity to thank you now for your thoughtfulness and generosity to Scouting.
For your FREE wills kit, send me an email at Michael.egan@scouting.org or give me a call at 503.225.5779. Thank you and “Be Prepared. For Life!”

Horse rides at Butte Creek
Butte Creek Scout Ranch offers both half-day and full-day rides for second-year Webelos, Boy Scouts, Venturers and other Scouts and their leaders. Boys get a brief introduction, then take off for a trail ride in the surrounding forest area. This is a great activity to put on your troop calender each year, as the Scouts will want to go back again and again. The ranch is also able to provide trail rides for other groups such as Girl Scouts, LDS girls, LDS youth mutual groups, and other organizations – just ask and let us help you find the perfect ride for your group. For more details, please visit the Butte Creek information page at www.cpcbsa.org/buttecreek

There are only a few spaces left for the 2015 Wood Badge Course. If your intent was to register, please take care of it today, before the regrets and “I was going to” or “I should have” set in.
