As Chair of the Full-Time Continuing Contract Faculty Senators Council (C-FSC), I write to welcome you to the inaugural C-FSC Newsletter. This is the third year of our Council’s existence as one of the constitutive councils on the New York University Senate.

The C-FSC has developed a strong, effective, and respected voice in University governance. Members sit on all standing Senate, University and provostial committees and task forces.

We hope that our newsletter and website give you real-time insight into what we do, and encourages you to engage with us. History of the C-FSC

The Full Time Continuing Contract Faculty Council (C-FSC) is completing its third year at NYU, fulfilling the 2013 charge from former President John Sexton and the NYU trustees. Prior to establishing this council, continuing contract faculty lacked an official voice in university governance.

A Planning Committee of elected continuing contract faculty from all colleges/schools served as an advisory group to the Senate Committee on Organization and Governance (SCOG). The Planning Committee’s main role was to present recommendations regarding the representation and participation of contract faculty within University governance. Members of the Planning Committee were co-chairs Ann Marie Mauro (NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing) and Randolph Mowry (Steinhardt), and co-secretaries Susan Stehlik (Stern) and Sylvia Maier (Libraries).

Since 2014, the C-FSC has been represented on the University Senate, which also consists of representation from NYU administrators, tenure/tenure track faculty, and students.

Year 1 (2014-2015)

  • All NYU schools held the first elections for the C-FSC seats;

  • C-FSC Steering Committee formed;

  • President and the Provost invited C-FSC Steering Committee members to meet and discuss issues and concerns of the Council and its constituency;

  • C-FSC initiated a review process of all policies regarding continuing contract faculty;

  • Following the review, the C-FSC sent recommendations to the Provost and individual colleges/schools for consideration.

Year 2 (2015-2016)

  • C-FSC conducted the first University salary and benefits survey of all continuing contract faculty with response rate over 50%.

Year 3 (2016-2017)

  • C-FSC representation on 24 University governance committees;

  • C-FSC Steering Committee members met with the President and Provost to discuss issues relevant to continuing contract faculty (e.g., excellence in teaching and work-life balance).

Other achievements:

  • Active participation in process to revise NYU Faculty Handbook, resulting in :

    • clarification of University procedures for appointment, reappointment and promotion for full-time continuing contract faculty;

    • development of procedures for grievances from full-time continuing contract faculty on all issues except appointment, reappointment and promotion; and

    • disciplinary procedures involving continuing contract faculty;

  • Survey of all continuing contract faculty on participation in school and departmental governance;

  • Participation as members of the search committees for President, Provost and Chief Diversity Officer;

  • Ongoing review of and development of recommendations regarding individual college/school policies for appointment, reappointment and promotion;

  • Coordinating activity with the Tenure and Tenure Track Faculty Senators Council (T-FSC) on issues of mutual concern; and

  • Hosting faculty receptions (C-FSC only and with T-FSC) for new and returning faculty.
