The Show Must Go On...
Due to the pandemic, many events had to adapt and help to keep our region safe. I’m proud to have served during these tough times alongside Carter County Drug Prevention, Tennessee SADD, SADD Nation and the SADD Student Leadership Council.
Every year Carter County Drug Prevention Youth Coalition holds a Christmas party and this year was no different! On December 9th we held a virtual murder mystery. Participants were given food and a script; we were set. Together we solved the puzzle. This event proved to be a great way to get to know other coalition members and welcome new faces.
Conversations on Sexuality kicked off on December 15th. Dr. Bethany Novotny and I moderated the conversation. I learned how the LGBTQ+ Community is discriminated against within our very own region. It was disheartening to hear that the LGBTQ+ youth in our district had the highest rates of suicide, tobbaco use and other substance use. The panelists explained how allies can help make sure that the LGBTQ+ Community is being accepted, from simply accepting them to standing up to microaggressions. Conversations on Sexuality was extremely enlightening and I’m glad I could help moderate this Conversation.
This year I was fortunate enough to attend Wreaths Across America with my Grandfather, a Veteran of the Vietnam War. On December 19th, at 8am the somber event that is Wreaths Across America began. On this memorable day 8,600 wreaths were laid on Veterans’ graves in honor and remembrance of their great sacrifice. The event I attended was at the Veterans Administration Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tennessee. Participating groups included, but not limited to: Rolling Thunder, Civil Air Patrol and the Scouts.
The Student Leadership Council held a meeting on December 21st to discuss the details of fundraising for the upcoming year. Fundraising ideas included events such as the virtual race (that was held earlier in the year) and new ideas like a Tik Tok Dance Challenge. I love that I can exchange ideas with other youth advocates from across our country, together we make for a better tomorrow.
I look forward to the New Year, new aspirations and meeting new faces. I can’t wait to work alongside our members soon.
Everyone stay safe and be kind, always Emma Carpenter.
