  • Stimulants have side effects in common with cocaine, and may include paranoia, dangerously high body temperatures, and an irregular heartbeat, especially if stimulants are taken in large doses or in ways other than swallowing a pill.
  • Opioids, which act on the same parts of the brain as heroin, can cause drowsiness, nausea, constipation, and, depending on the amount taken, slowed breathing.
  • Depressants can cause slurred speech, shallow breathing, fatigue, disorientation, lack of coordination, and seizures upon withdrawal from chronic use.
The PEAK Mentoring program would like to take this time to give an update on the events for June 2021. We made two new matches last week bringing the current total to 8 matches in the program and mentors are reporting positive results from the mentees. The program is recruiting mentors and mentees weekly and should be seeing our number of matches rise in the coming months. PEAK Mentors would like to thank our two newest mentors Juile Schmees and Sherree Schmees for volunteering to be a positive adult influence in two girls lives in Johnson County. Wide Open Wednesdays is a free lunch and activity program that has given away over 5000 lunches since June 2020! We are extremely happy to be able to help and support the youth of our community with this lunch program. If you are interested in becoming a PEAK Mentor and developing a positive relationship with an at-risk youth or know a kiddo that can benefit from our program. Please contact Shannon Payne at elizabethtonmentors@cartercountydrugprevention.org or call 423-791-8674.
