Our Outstanding partner for the month of July is United Way of East Tennessee Highlands

We are always grateful for the support United Way provides us. This month we are EXTRA grateful for their support during the "Week of Caring!" Employees from Northeast Community Credit Union and Snap On built and installed little free library boxes for both our South Hills and downtown locations. Stop by for books for adults and children, Narcan and resources.

July Outstanding Coalition Member
Lori Hamilton, Calvary Baptist Church

Lori is the Children's Ministry Coordinator at Calvary Baptist Church.

Lori shared:

Why is Carter County Drug Prevention important to you and/or our community?

CCDP is vital to our community. I have worked with children & families in Carter County for 20+ years & seen first hand how destructive drug addiction is, not only for the one in addiction, but for the entire family. The education, prevention initiatives, recovery, & support provided by CCDP for our community is huge! We are fortunate to have CCDP & all they provide. I have had the opportunity to partner with CCDP many times & I love their heart for all people, & they recognize the value & worth of everyone. I love that so much.

What is your favorite memory, moment, event or partnership with Carter County Drug Prevention?

I have a lot of favorite memories with CCDP. One of my most recent favorites is being part of Celebrating Families.

We are so grateful for the way Lori serves our coalition and our community! Check out her new project at The Nest at Calvary! The Nest is a place of refuge for moms. They provide diapers, wipes, and other necessities moms may need (as available) for their babies and toddlers. They also desire to connect with moms and help build community for them as they host regular Bible studies and Moms' Night Out events throughout the month.

Hello coalition members,

BIG NEWS for this month: we are partnering with Recovery Resources to start a video podcast! The "Whiskey Ain't Workin' Anymore" podcast mixes a little 90’s country music and a lot of laughs with stories of hope and resilience. We can't wait to introduce you to some of our favorite good humans every Friday night. Watch our Facebook for the podcast link.

We are so excited to welcome Brittny Horton as our Drug Free Communities Program Coordinator. She will be working on alcohol, tobacco and prescription drug programs and we could not be more excited to have her join our team.

Some of our June 2022 highlights are:
  • Some of our youth coalition members attended the TNSTRONG conference and Tennessee Teen Institute in June. Both conferences were amazing experiences and we can't wait to see how they create change in the community with the things they have learned. Check out some of the pictures below!
  • Brooke and I were able to attend the Mayors' Criminal Justice and Opioid Summit in Knoxville on June 17th and learned great information about innovative practices in prevention and recovery. Picture below with Dr. Steve Loyd!
  •  Melissa Taylor from the Northeast Regional Health office hosted a youth disaster preparedness class for us this month. Kids were taught several strategies for keeping themselves and their families safe.
Thanks for helping us make Carter County a healthier place to live.

June Update

By Shannon Payne, PEAK Mentor Program Director

Is there a correlation between people that volunteer their time to others and those who do not choose to serve others? Not all people serve others because of their persona or, I would like to think of it as, emotional intelligence. This may be a crazy theory, but not all people have emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is how we use our emotions in a positive manner to empathize with others' plights, stressors, conflicts, and different forms of communication. With that said, I feel if someone has the ability to control their emotions they should be able to detect other people’s emotions to help build rapport, make friendships, and effectively communicate. The concept of detecting others emotions is essential in serving because if someone cannot detect another person's emotions, theoretically, they lack honed emotional intelligence and have no interest in serving others. This sounds like a narcissist, but if an individual cannot detect emotions, then it really is not their fault. These individuals experience a condition known as alexithymia, which is a condition where someone cannot identify or express emotions caused by childhood trauma, brain injury, or other medical conditions. So, lack of important factors such as empathy and motivation could impact why some people do not serve others.

If you are interested in becoming a PEAK Mentor and being a positive influence in a kid's life, please reach out via email, phone, text, or Facebook to Shannon Payne shannon@cartercountydrugprevention.org (423) 707-9207. Please refer kiddos that could benefit from our program via email or phone.

Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story!
