OUTSTANDING PARTNER
The PEAK Mentoring program would like to take this time to give an update on the events of February 2021. First, the month of February 2021 was proclaimed by the City and County of Elizabethton National Mentoring month. The program currently has 3 matches helping mentees form positive relationships to negate adverse childhood experiences (ACES). PEAK Mentors was just approved by the Johnson County Director of Schools Dr. Mishell Simcox to curriulate our mentee referral forms with the school guidance counselors. We currently have 8 PEAK Mentors in Johnson County and we are looking forward to matching them with mentees soon.

Winter Wednesdays is a feeding program we have been doing all winter. We have successfully given out over 600 free lunches and activities to the local children of our area. Moreover, we will
continue Winter Wednesdays as long as we have the resources to do so.

If you are interested in
becoming a PEAK Mentor and developing a positive relationship with an at-risk youth. Please ontact Shannon Payne at elizabethtonmentors@cartercountydrugprevention.org or call 423-791-8674.

 G.S.A Meeting

On April third at 6:00pm the Eastern Tennessee’s Gay Straight Alliance will have its kick off! We hope to have a night full of education and fun. Consisting of a Kahoot or two, games and planning for the future of this group.

What is the G.S.A? As said on Eastern Tennessee G.S.A  Facebook page “Eastern Tennessee’s Gay Straight Alliance is a safe place for LGBTQ+ youth and allies alike. Where teens can be themselves without the fear of being judged by their peers. We also pride ourselves on advocacy. We want to create a future where no matter what someone’s sexual orientation, gender identity or race they are loved and accepted not here at the G.S.A, but by their families, friends and fellow classmates.”

We’re only missing one thing. Youth. I must ask for you to spread the word to youth you think might be interested and ask them to join our Facebook Group “Eastern Tennessee G.S.A.'' where they will be kept up to date on events, get zoom links and be able to share their own advocacy work in their communities!

Tobacco
KICK BUTTS DAY

March 20 is National Kick Butts Day.  Many choose to quit using tobacco in the form of cigarettes on this day.  If you are thinking of quitting, here are some tips to think about.

  1. Make a plan
  2. Think about why you want to quit (for your health, for my family)
  3. Pick a quit date
  4. Identify your triggers (the smell of coffee, right after eating, etc)-download the trigger tracker here
  5. Nicotine Replacement Therapy might be a choice (patches or gum)
  6. Get rid of ash trays, lighters, cigarettes and clean to rid your home and car of cigarette smoke
  7.  Find support (family, friends, community programs)                TN QUITLINE =                            1-800-QUIT NOW                           (1-800-784-8669)
  8. Find ways to control cravings (take a walk, do something on your to-do list, exercise, do something theraputic)

MEET OUR NEW STAFF
Im not one to bring attention to myself; however, many of you do not know me so let me introduce myself.  My name is Denise Woods.  I am a native of Johnson County, TN (Mountain City).  I have worked in Prevention for 12 years and served Johnson County as a Certified Prevention Specialist 1.  My passion is to work with youth to educate, build skills, develop leadership, inspire and empower them to be the best individual they can be.
My experience working in the prevention field includes planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating activities in the community to reduce substance use.  As a SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) advisor in Jo. Co., our youth served the community for many years and was awarded Volunteers of the Year through the Johnson County Chamber of Commerce.  I have experience in grantwriting and data collection which is a necessity in sustaining prevention efforts in communities.
Through many years in prevention, I was able to obtain lots of valuable trainings that allowed me to facilitate prevention programs such as Responsible Beverage Service, Mobile Team Challenge Low Ropes Course, Moral Reconation Therapy, Sobriety Checkpoints, and Narcan as well as Strategic Prevention Framework and Logic Model processes.
On a personal note I am a Christian mother of 2 children both of which are married and I am patiently waiting to become a grandma.  I am caretaker for my elderly parents both of whom have major health problems and disabilities.  I am a Sunday School Teacher and my church is an important part of my life.  My primary job is Support Staff at Mountain City Elementary School.  My furry friends are Tiny Tim and Squirt and Buttercup(Cats and dog).
I am honored and blessed to be part of CCDP and l look forward to working with you.  I can be reached via data@cartercountydrugprevention.org. or cell: 423-291-2430. :)
