Acceptable forms of ID to prevent the sale of alcohol to minors.

Although Tennessee State law does not require liquor-by-the-drink establishments to check ID prior to serving an alcoholic beverage, in order to prevent sales to under 21 individuals, it is a recommended best practice for establishments to have an internal policy regarding checking identification prior to serving. Examples of the recommended forms of identification are:
  • Driver’s license
  • Concealed carry permit
  • ID card- state issue only
  • Passport
  • Passport card
  • Foreign passport with US visa
  • Green card
  • Military ID
  • Employment authorization card with photo.
Carding of all consumers buying beer at off premise establishments is mandatory, but an exemption exists for those obviously over the age of 50.

Popcorn Lung
"Popcorn lung" is the nickname for bronchiolitis obliterans. That's a condition that damages your lungs' smallest airways and makes you cough and feel short of breath. It's sometimes caused by breathing in a chemical used to flavor microwave popcorn. But other chemicals or lung illnesses can also cause popcorn lung.

When you breathe in, air flows into your lungs through your windpipe, or trachea. Your windpipe divides into two tubes called the bronchi, which lead to your left and right lungs.

Inside your lungs, those tubes split again and again, like the branches of a tree. The smallest of those branches are called bronchioles, and they end in tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are where the oxygen is picked up by your blood.

When you have "popcorn lung," those tiny air passages get irritated and inflamed. That leads to scarring that makes them narrower. That makes it harder for you to get enough air.

The chemical that gave this condition its nickname is diacetyl. After workers at a factory that packaged microwave popcorn were found to have bronchiolitis obliterans more often than other people, some companies stopped using diacetyl as a flavoring. But it's still used in some electronic cigarette flavors in the US.

Would you be able to tell if these were pills or candy if the lables weren't there?
The PEAK Mentoring program would like to take this time to give an update on the events for April 2021. We had a very progessive month here at PEAK Mentors! The mentee referrals are starting to come in from the Carter and Johnson County school systems. We received 5 referrals this month and two of them are getting matched next week! We currently have 6 matches in the program and the mentors are reporting positive results from their mentees. Also,
the program had a site visit from the NRPA and OJJDP that went off without a hitch. They were pleased with our efforts with the program and said we had over exceeded their expectations of the program. With that said, we would like to give a special thanks to Jilian Reece and Kelly Kitchens with their continued support and help with our program! If you are interested in becoming a PEAK Mentor and developing a positive relationship with an at-risk youth or know a kiddo that can benefit from our program. Please contact Shannon Payne at
elizabethtonmentors@cartercountydrugprevention.org or call 423-791-8674.

No update this month

Thank You to our volunteer eggers (Youth Coalition and parent drivers) as well as everyone who participated in this event.  We appreciate your support!
