THANK YOU to everyone who took our first survey on combining the CCDP, Health Council and Community Advisory Board Meetings.

The results are as follows (Thanks to Jayne Harper for this report!):

NOVEMBER UPDATE

Over the last few months we have surveyed members of CCDP, CAB, and the Health Council about the potential for combining these 3 groups into a single collaborative group with the goal being to effectively marshal the time, brainpower and assets of the many people who desired participation in multiple groups and minimize the duplication of time, effort and human resources across the 3 groups (see above for summary).

Respondents were spread very equally across members of each of the 3 groups. Our survey revealed that an overwhelming majority of respondents were in favor of forming a Carter County Collaborative among the 3 groups, citing benefits of pooling resources and time toward combined efforts. Responses gained through the survey also let us learn that it was extremely important to maintain the priorities, values, and authenticity of each group while consolidating membership and efforts. The survey also revealed the importance to members of all 3 groups of maintaining a structure that allowed for focus areas and priority efforts to continue for events and programming of significant importance to each of the 3 groups to maintain each group’s effectiveness. Finally, the survey clearly identified the 1st Thursday as being the day of the month that was better for respondents for a monthly meeting lasting 1½ hours.

Leadership of the 3 groups have been meeting to review survey responses and create a framework that achieves collaboration and a structure that allows for maintaining the distinct values and priorities of each of the 3 groups. During respective CAB, CCDP and health council meetings in November, leaders of each group will present a proposed structure  (CCC Structure & Responsibilities attached), agenda  (CCC Agenda attached), committee list  (CCC List of Subcommittees attached), and documentation formats for committees  (CCC Committee Update Form attached) and events  (CCC Event and Activity Form attachedfor the Carter County Collaborative for your review and consideration.

Please take this very short survey to best set the Collaborative up for success: https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/5972964/Carter-County-Collaborative-Should-the-CAB-CCDP-Health-Council-Join-in-2021-copy.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you!

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicine Safety Program is a free, evidence-based, comprehensive Common Core-ready educational program on the safe use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, with a rich online hub. Learn more about the OTC Medicine Safety Program

Research shows that students begin to self-medicate around age 11. If not equipped with the knowledge and training to make safe choices, mistakes can happen. By age 16, approximately 90% of adolescents report self-administering OTC medications. In 2018, America’s poison centers managed more than 300,000 exposure cases involving children ages 6 to 19; more than half of these cases involved medication errors and misuse.

This tip sheet, created in partnership with Johnson & Johnson, suggests best practices for prevention leaders to implement the OTC Medicine Safety Program to educate our nation's youth with the knowledge they need to make good choices.

Youth 4 Youth Summit

By: Elizabeth Carpenter

October 24th kicked off the Youth 4 Youth Summit. I was one out of hundreds of students fortunate enough to attend this incredible summit. From 11:00 in the morning to 5:30 at night, myself and other students across the globe learned about the growing use of phones and how teens are becoming more and more addicted to their phones and social media. Sessions I attended included lessons on ethical tech, the importance of mental health and most importantly how to bring this information back to our communities and how to implement it in the future. Speakers for this event were gathered from all over the world. Amazingly these intellectual Speakers were bringing in their different views on the rising phone pandemic. It was highly enlightening to see how similar our issues were. Speakers also included students, who had dedicated their lives to fighting the rising amounts of phone use, including Mati Murata, a proud SLC/CAC member that I’m fortunate enough to know from serving on the SLC board.  Lastly one of the speakers was the revered Jeff Orlowski the brilliant Producer of the Social Dilemma. I’m so glad I attended this informative Summit. I was able to meet so many passionate advocates from around the world and learned so much about the issues with phones and ways that we can make sure that we’re getting what we want out of our lives.

By Shannon Payne

The PEAK Mentoring program would like to share events that occurred during the month of October 2020. The World Tour Wednesdays are rolling around the globe with over 300 kids fed for the month. The PEAK program is happy to be collaborating with Women of MC to expand mentoring to Mountain City and Johnson County,  helping kids in our neighboring communities form positive relationships with caring adults.

The PEAK Mentoring program is accepting applications for caring adults to help kids through adversity and form a positive relationship with a caring adult. See the flyer below for upcoming trainings.

The program is also accepting applications for mentees from ages 8-18.

If you are interested in participating in our program or would like to refer youth, please contact Shannon Payne 423-791-8674 or email elizabethtonmentors@outlook.com with any questions.
