The PEAK Mentoring program would like to take this opportunity and give an update on October 2021 events. October was a great month for recruitment of mentors and mentees in our area. We added 2 new mentors and 2 new mentees to our program in the month of October 2021. Operation Angel Wing came to the office Oct. 22nd and provided local health professionals with certified training. The nonprofit organization taught us about psychological first aid, trauma, and suicide prevention in adiutls. It was a great class and everyone who attended got certified. October 1st was a special day because we officially started our new grant expanding our program to Mountain City and the Johnson County area. We are currently looking for referrals for mentors and mentees in that area if anyone can help. PEAK Mentors provided tickets for our mentors and mentees to go enjoy a day at Doe River Gorge on Oct. 24th. It was reported that the matches had a great time doing all of the fun activities Doe River Gorge is providing for attendees. Happy Halloween!

If you are interested in becoming a PEAK Mentor and changing a young person’s life, please reach out to Shannon Payne at 423-707-9207 or shannon@cartercountydrugprevention.org

The Carter County Youth Coalition has been very busy in the month of October.  Students hosted a yard sale where all items were donated and collected.  100% of the proceeds went right back to the Youth Coalition to help pay for their state competition coming up in the month of November.  October 29th, the youth will be participating in a clean up day for National Beta’s Founders Day.  In addition to that, they will be handing out candy in downtown Elizabethton for trick or treaters.  The students have been working hard, on individual competitions as well as group projects, which will be entered into the state competition for the National Beta Club.  We celebrated together as a group with our Halloween party, where the students went bobbing for donuts on a stick, had creepy touch boxes filled with things like boiled cauliflower, ate pizza and had lots of laughs.  Students signed pledges for Red Ribbon Week, in which they promised to be drug free.
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

GSA

Eastern Tennessee's Gay Straight Alliance is a safe place for LGBTQ+ youth and allies alike. Where teens can be themselves without the fear of being judged by their peers. We also pride ourselves on advocacy. We want to create a future where no matter what someone's sexual orientation, gender identity or race, they are loved and accepted not only here at the G.S.A, but by their families, friends and fellow classmates.
