5 Tips to Reduce Stigma of Substance Use
1. Know the facts. Education about mental illness and substance use disorders (SUD) will debunk myths.
2. Be aware of your biases, attitudes and behavior concerning mental illness and SUD.
3. Choose your words wisely. Use words like "person suffering from a substance use disorder" instead of addict, or " Substance Abuse" instead of drug abuse.
4. Educate others on the effects of stigma.
5. Support NOT enable people who are recovering from substance abuse. |

The PEAK Mentoring program would like to take this time to give an update on the progress, events, and activities from August 2021. The program currently has 8 matches with mentors and mentees. The program had some staff from UT Extension come to the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library to teach our mentees the importance of nutrition. The participants of the class learned about basic nutrition and made a healthy parfit toward the end of class. PEAK Mentors participated in the National Night Out event, First Fridays in Downtown Elizabethton, The United Way of East TN Highlands Golf Tournament, The Appalachian Fair, and the International Overdose Awareness Day in the month of August. Getting the word out about our program is important to us and we are happy to volunteer our time for boots on the ground agencies and events. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer to be a caring adult in an at-risk youth life. Please contact Shannon Payne at 423-791-8674 for more information or email elizabethtonmentors@cartercountydrugprevention.org
Also, we have referral forms available for at-risk youth if you know a kid that could benefit from a positive influence in their life. Thank you!

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
STEM After School Program
S--Science
T--Technology
E--Engineering
M--Mathematics
STEM is an evidence-based strategy for durg prevention when youth are involved as an extracurricular activity. Thus CCDP partners with PEAK (Promoting Esteem Among Kids) and Future Innovators through Pure Legacy to provide STEM camps. STEM provides learning that goes beyond the mere transfer of knowledge. It engages students and equips them with critical thinking, problem solving, creative and collaborative skills, and ultimately establishes connections between the school, work place, community and the global economy.
