Life and Liberty
I was drawn to this moment of an American Flag mounted on a tree with blooming flowers below it, in the country morning sunlight, because it reminds me of how the Flag is a symbol of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness", a well-known phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. The phrase gives three examples of the "unalienable rights" which the Declaration says have been given to all human beings by their Creator, and which governments are created to protect. Without it we have chaos.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America:
READ THIS...THEN READ IT TO YOUR CHILDREN...THEN READ IT TO YOUR FRIENDS...it's good that we all remember who we are!
Happy Fourth of July to you and your family from CMCS!
God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty are your gift to every human being.
Help us to continue a good work begun long ago.
Make our vision clear and our will strong: that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs to every life on earth.
Turn our hearts toward the family of nations: to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and to find safety only in the common good of all.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
R/. Amen.
