Advent is a time to get ready for Christmas by waiting and preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus. In a world that's all about instant information, many Catholic men admit they don't pray as much as they should. Many of us, in fact, rely on our wives to set the spiritual tone at home. But during Advent, our families look to us, as husbands and fathers, for more leadership.
Amidst all the holiday noise and chaos from the commercial world, Advent gives us an opportunity to quiet our hearts and minds, and make room for Christ. It's not about learning to pray specifically for Advent, but rather setting an example of silence that leaves a lasting impact on us and our loved ones. As Pope Benedict XVI once said,
"Silence is so lacking in this world, which is often too noisy. Let us cultivate interior recollection in this season of preparing for Christmas, so that we can receive and keep Jesus in our lives."
I remember the wise words the nuns used to tell me back in 1st Grade:
"God gave you two ears and one mouth, so listen more than you talk." This Advent, let's make some new habits. One great suggestion is download the
"Family Prayer Before Meals" by Bishop Joseph Perry. Studies show that when families come together to break bread and pray at least three times a week, it has a noticeable impact on the stability and unity of the family.
The purpose of Advent is to bring us back to God, and to foster renewal for the mission of our salvation through the Christ Child. Because when men put God first all else that matters falls into place.
So this Advent, give yourself deliberate moments of silence and make a resolve to bring yourself - and your family - closer to Christ! Below are some resources for you, and I'll post more on Tumblr - chicagocatholicman.tumblr.com - as they become available:
