Catholic Manhood Nuggets - Paying Taxes And Spiritual Welfare
October 22nd Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 22:15-21: Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.*
Both St. Peter (1 Pet. 2:13-14) and St. Paul (Rom. 13:1-7) emphasize the importance of Christians demonstrating loyalty to their country. We, too, have a duty to do what we can to help enlighten others about the divine, natural law, and the obligations that come with being a citizen of the state. Our loyalty to our Church and God will also disprove the slanderous claims of those who oppose Christianity and the Catholic faith and believe that obedience to country comes at the expense of loyalty to our Lord and Savior.
* "Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that He said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God" (Mt 22:18-21)."
