Don't forget your Bamboo Extract

Now that the flu season is here, it is a great time to take Bamboo Extract. If you work in high-risk environments like hospitals, medical clinics and schools or if you go to public areas like airports, shopping malls, theme parks or theaters, where this is a lot of people traffic, it makes you more prone to contracting the flu and other types of viruses. Taking Bamboo Extract before you head out can help protect you against these viruses. One of its active ingredients, guaiacul, is similar to that of Tamiflu.

For more than 10 years, Myomin has been our #1 supplement, used by both health care practitioners and patients alike. It is such a useful and effective supplement for both men and women. In this special edition of the newsletter, we are addressing some frequently asked questions about Myomin’s mechanisms, usage and recommended uses.
Myomin Q&A

What is Myomin?

In a nutshell, it is an herbal supplement that reduces aromatase expression and thereby lowers estrogen and increases testosterone levels.

What is Myomin recommended for?

Myomin is recommended for any estrogen-dominant condition in both men and women (see Table 1 for common estrogen-dominant conditions).

How do I know if I am estrogen dominant?

  • If you have any of the conditions listed in Table 1, then you are estrogen dominant.
  • Laboratory tests that check your levels of estradiol, estrone, estriol and/or progesterone can also indicate whether you are estrogen dominant.
  • If you don’t have access to lab tests, then look for strawberry dots on the tongue (Figure 1) or cherry angiomas on your chest or abdomen (Figure 2). These are signs of estrogen dominance.
You can schedule a consultation with Dr. Chi himself and he’ll be able to determine if you are estrogen dominant or not.

I don’t know my estrogen level, can I still take Myomin?

Yes, you definitely can, if you are showing signs of estrogen dominance or have a history of the conditions listed in Table 1.

What are the ingredients in Myomin?

Myomin contains the herbs Astragalus, Curcuma and Cyperus.

Is it vegetarian?

Yes, Myomin contains only herbs in vegetarian capsules.

How does Myomin work exactly?

In both men and women, hormones like progesterone, androstenedione or testosterone are converted to one or more of 3 forms of estrogen: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2) or estriol (E3) (see Figure 3). Myomin blocks the conversion of androstenedione to E1 and testosterone to E2 by reducing aromatase expression (see Figure 3). Estradiol and estrone are the two strong forms of estrogen and are associated with many conditions including cancer. Myomin also competes with estrogen at estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from attaching to its receptors.

Will it reduce my estrogen completely?

No. It only blocks conversion to estrone and estradiol. It will still allow the continuous production of estriol, the “good” estrogen.

Who can use Myomin?
  • Premenopausal women
  • Postmenopausal women
  • Men
According to Dr. Jonathan Wright, MD, the pioneer of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), men and women on BHRT should add Myomin to correct hyperaromatization of testosterone to estradiol.

When should Myomin be taken?

Myomin is recommended during meals or after meals.

What dosage is typically recommended?

The dosage varies according to the condition. Typical dosage can vary from 4 capsules to 9 capsules per day. Please consult your health care professional for the dose that is right for you.

How long should I take Myomin?

It depends on your condition. It can range from 3-6 months to more than 2 years. As long as you are on HRT or BHRT, you always need to add Myomin at 2 capsules, 2 times per day.

I have chronically dense breasts for years and Myomin has helped me. Can I take it indefinitely? Is it enough?

Yes, Myomin can be taken indefinitely for chronic estrogen-responsive conditions like dense breasts. You should consider taking Angiostop (click HERE to learn more about Angiostop) as well if you have dense breasts with cherry angiomas, especially if they are located on the breasts (Figure 4).

I read that Myomin increases estrogen quotient. What is the estrogen quotient (EQ)?

EQ is defined as estriol (E3) divided by the ratio of estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2).

           EQ = E3/ (E1 + E2)

Research shows that, in the presence of other estrogens, estriol becomes an anticarcinogen. So an EQ over 1 is ideal for lower estrogen-related cancer risk.

How do you know if Myomin is working for me?
  • For women, you can check your estrone, estradiol and estriol levels (through saliva or urine test) and calculate your estrogen quotient (EQ). It should be over 1.
  • For men, check your testosterone and estradiol levels.
  • A reduction of symptoms associated with your estrogen-related condition is always a good indication that Myomin is working for you. Or if you are taking it for abdominal weight, a reduction in weight or waist size is a sign that you are responding well to Myomin.
  • If you have an estrogen-responsive growth, an imaging test can help monitor the size of the growth to see if Myomin is working.

Cherry angiomas are a sign of estrogen dominance. Will they disappear if I take Myomin?

No, but you shouldn’t be developing more cherry angiomas. If you still develop new cherry angiomas even with Myomin, it means either you are not taking enough Myomin or you should consider adding Angiostop.

Is Myomin a form of hormone replacement?

No, it is not hormone replacement. But as long as you are on HRT, you should always add Myomin to balance your estrogens (E3> E1 + E2). Even when you are on progesterone, you still need to add Myomin.

I am on hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Should I take Myomin?

Yes, it is actually highly recommended to add Myomin if you are on HRT, whether synthetic or bioidentical. For example, many men on testosterone therapy find that their testosterone level is still low despite the HRT. It turns out that their testosterone is being converted to estradiol. So adding Myomin will help block this conversion, reducing estradiol and achieving the desired increased testosterone. We see this in the following two clinical case reports:

J. Wright, MD from WA, has a male patient on daily 75mg testosterone therapy, which caused an increase in estradiol. Within 2 months of taking Myomin, his abnormal estradiol level was within normal range (Table 2).

G. Depke, ND from CA, has a 47 y/o/f patient taking progesterone and DHEA for adrenal fatigue. She had high E2 and progesterone levels and low Pg/E2 ratio. She took Myomin for 4 months and her hormones balanced (Table 3).

Since Myomin acts on aromatase, can I take it with an aromatase inhibitor drug like Arimidex, Femara or Aromasin?

Yes, it can be combined with an aromatase inhibitor drug for enhanced effect. Myomin does not inhibit aromatase but it reduces DNA expression of the aromatase enzyme.

What are the advantages of Myomin over aromatase inhibitors?

Aromatase inhibitor drugs are only recommended for postmenopausal women who already have breast cancer. Myomin can be taken by premenopausal women, postmenopausal women and even men who either already have existing conditions or for prevention. Also aromatase inhibitor drugs blocks all estrogen production from other hormones. They lower E1, E2 and E3. So patients often have very low estrogen, leading to problems like osteoporosis. Myomin is not an aromatase blocker. Instead it reduces DNA expression of aromatase. It reduces E1 and E2 but it increases the good estrogen, E3. So patients on Myomin do not have the side effects of those who are on aromatase inhibitors.

How does Myomin compare with Chrysin?

Chrysin is considered to have poor oral absorption.

Yes, you can. DIM is another supplement that acts on estrogen metabolism; however, they have different mechanisms.

How does the supplement DIM differ from Myomin?

Myomin has 3 mechanisms which already includes what DIM does. DIM’s effect is on the estrone metabolites, 2-hydroxyestrone (2OH) and 16-hydroxyestrone (16OH). It reduces 16OH for a higher 2OH/16OH ratio. Myomin can also reduce 16OH. In addition, Myomin reduces estrone itself, before it gets metabolized to 2OH or 16 OH. Furthermore, Myomin also acts on reducing estradiol, the most potent form of estrogen.

Does Myomin work on cysts?

Yes. In fact, one of the many factors of cysts is estrogen dominances. So if you have cysts, consider taking Myomin. It has been very effective for cysts in the ovary, liver, kidneys and thyroid.

I have breast cancer, which is estrogen-positive. Can I take Myomin?

You definitely can. Myomin is recommended for any hormone-responsive cancers like breast, prostate, colon or lung cancer, etc. Take it with Angiostop for best results.

I watched Dr. Chi’s video and learned that Myomin helps with insulin resistance. How?

Insulin resistance is closely associated with estrogen dominance. By managing estrogen dominance, Myomin is able to control insulin resistance as well. We have many cases where taking Myomin has helped reduce HbA1c levels.

Can I take Myomin even if I am on Metformin?

Yes. Any individual who takes Metformin and the HbA1c level is still higher than 5.6 should add Myomin to help lower HbA1c level.

Does Myomin reduce belly fat? How?

Yes. Abdominal fat has the highest amount of aromatase, which converts testosterone to estradiol, leading to more fat buildup. By reducing aromatase, fat tissue, especially in the belly, is reduced as well.

Can you take it while you’re pregnant? How about while breastfeeding?

No, Myomin is not recommended while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Will Myomin reduce or alter the effect of birth control pills?

No.

Are there any contraindications with Myomin?

No. Myomin can be taken with any drugs or supplements. Just take it an hour apart from other supplements or drugs.

Are there any side effects from Myomin?

About 1% to 2% of people taking Myomin have reported side effects like bloating or gas. Usually this resolves if Myomin is taken during a full meal. If the symptoms do not resolve, take Myomin Plus instead to reduce bloating and other side effects.
