Nobel Prize Winner Discovered Malaria Cure through Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine
Tu Youyou, a Chinese pharmacologist with no doctoral degree and no foreign training, was one of three recipients of the 2015 Nobel Prize for Medicine early this week. She was awarded the highest accolade in Medicine for her discovery of artemisinin, the cure for malaria, from the herb Artemisia annua after scouring ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine manuals.

Currently about half of the world’s population, most of them in underdeveloped countries, are at risk of contracting malaria. And over 450,000 people die each year from it; many of them children. Tu’s discovery of the anti-malaria drug 40 years ago has saved millions of lives. But no one really knew who she is or how she discovered artemisinin until now.

During the Vietnam War, many soldiers fighting in Vietnam as well as thousands in Southern China were falling ill to and dying of malaria. After unsuccessfully treating malaria with the conventional drug Chloroquine, the Chinese government turned to traditional medicine by commissioning a secret military project, Project 523, to find a solution to reduce deaths from malaria. Tu Youyou was handpicked to lead the research.

At that time 240,000 compounds have already been screened in the US and China without any positive results. Reviewing thousands of Chinese herbal medicine texts and visiting traditional medical practitioners across China, she and her team ultimately collected 2,000 potential herbal remedies, narrowing them down to 380 and testing each one on mice. One of the compounds, from Artemisia annua, did reduce the number of malaria parasites in the blood. After further tests, Tu and her team were puzzled because the herb’s effects seem to disappear. Then Tu realized that her method of preparation of boiling – based on the ancient text – probably damaged the active ingredient. So she devised another extraction method using an ether-based solvent to isolate the active ingredient, artemisinin. This time when tested on animals with malaria, it proved to be 100% effective.

Now artemisinin is considered to be the best cure for malaria. In a statement, Tu said, “Artemisinin is a gift for the world’s people from traditional Chinese medicine.”
Chi’s Enterprise Herbal Supplements: Secret to Potency and Effectiveness Lies in the Manufacturing Processes
The production of Chi Supplements is not so different from the way Tu Youyou developed artemisinin. Many of the Chi supplements are formulated from Chinese herbs with uses rooted in centuries-old Traditional Chinese Medicine; however, we further use scientific research from Western medicine to extract and isolate active compounds using pharmaceutical grade procedures. The result: Chi supplements that are safe, potent and effective.
Chinese Herbs Have Been Used Successfully for Thousands of Years
About 80% of the herbs used in Chi supplements are grown in China. There are many who are concerned about the safety and efficacy of Chinese herbs. But if you look at the history, Chinese herbs have been around and used by the Chinese for the last 5,000 years. Many Chinese citizens reach beyond 100 years old, mainly because of herbs.

The negative label that some people automatically attach to China products stem from reports of contamination of Chinese products, including supplements. If these reports are true, then they only apply to a very small percentage of companies who do not employ strict manufacturing procedures. Up to 90% of the Chinese herbs sold around the world are labeled as coming from Japan and Korea, which many consumers consider as safe and quality products compared to Chinese products. But did you know that many Japanese and Korean companies actually source their herbs from China? One Japanese herbal company, for example, get their herbs from China and their products are processed in the same facilities as Chi supplements. This debunks the myth that all Chinese products must be contaminated and of low quality.

For almost 30 years now, thousands of health care practitioners and patients have used Chi supplements and can testify to their unique quality. The secret to the efficacy and safety of Chi supplements lies in the production procedures. From the farm to the finished product, each step involves well-researched knowledge and proven procedures that ensure their quality, potency and safety using factor-set standard ingredients with very predictable and repeatable results.
Location and harvest time essential for quality and potency of herbs
Several factors are essential when growing and processing the herbs for Chi’s supplements. The area, climate, and altitude where the herbs grow are important aspects to consider in order to maximize their potency. We know the ideal location and climate for each herb used. For example, Schisandra needs to be grown in the North and not in the South. Cistanche grows in desert areas. It is a parasitic plant that grows in the roots of other plants to get water and nutrients (Figure 1). Our asparagus is grown in very high elevation (Himalayan mountains), close to sunlight, and using only cow manure to ensure potency. We assay ingredients. So if an herb is grown in a different location, it can mean a 5 to 10 times difference in quality and potency.

It is also important to use only organic fertilizers and no pesticides to prevent contamination and preserve the herbs’ natural components and potency. About 80% of the herbs used in Chi supplements are grown in China. The rest are sourced from other countries. In China, our herbs are grown in our own leased organic farms to guarantee that they are free of chemicals and pesticides. To ensure that the herbsare chemical- and pesticide-free, we pay top dollar for farmers to grow seeds on their land, using only cow manure as natural fertilizer. Without pesticides and chemical fertilizers to hasten the growth and harvest of the herbs, productivity may be low. But that does not matter. What is important is that the harvested herbs have the maximum potency
possible. We value quality over quantity. Getting less amount of a potent product is better than getting more of a mediocre product.

Harvesting the herbs at the right time is another factor that can influence the effectiveness of the herbs. For example, to get the best green tea, it should be grown in a moist environment on cloudy mountains. And it is very important to harvest it at the end of March or early April just before the spring rains arrive. This is when it has the highest potency for making tea. Another example is Ginkgo biloba. The best time to harvest it is before the leaves turn yellow. Cistanche is another herb that has different properties depending on when it is harvested. It takes 3 years to grow and then is harvested in either April or October (Figure 1). The April harvest is typically better. After harvest, it needs to be reseeded. Lycium is also grown in desert areas and is harvested annually (Figure 2).

The prices of Chi supplements may be higher than some of the other companies but that is because you are paying for their potency and efficacy. We also know what active fraction and species of the ingredient is needed to get the therapeutic effect we want.

Let us look at curcumin as an example. It is an ingredient in Myomin. There are several curcuma species and each one has a specific set of properties (Figure 3). To achieve Myomin’s functions, we use the species, Curcuma zedoaria, at a specific fraction in order to achieve its aromatase and estrogen reducer effect when combined with its other ingredients.

Over the years, there has been an increasing trend of prices for Curcuma zedoaria, which is actually reflective of the overall price trend of herbs in China (Figure 4).

Another example is Angiostop, a sea cucumber extract. You can certainly find many sea cucumber products in the market at a much lower price. But they are essentially not the same product. Sea cucumber products in the market are typically just dried sea cucumber that has been made into a powder. Our sea cucumber extract is from a special species of sea cucumber found 40 meters under the South China Sea. Its active components have been isolated and purified so we can get the effects that we aim for: angiogenesis inhibition.
Pharmaceutical-Grade Extraction and Purification in GMP Facilities
Unlike the old method of herb cooking and concentration after harvesting, ingredients of Chi supplements go through several pharmaceutical-grade extraction and purification procedures for standardization, safety and potency.

Some herbal supplements are produced by simply grinding the single herbs into powder. No extraction procedure is employed to separate the active ingredients from the inactive ingredients, which may compromise the efficacy of the herbs. Chi supplements are produced by identifying, extracting and purifying the biologically active fractions of the herbs to obtain the most potent ingredients.

In America, hot water extraction of herbs is typically used which can only result in purity of up to 5%. Chi supplements have a 25 to 100 times concentration because we employ pharmaceutical type extraction. Sterilization is used throughout the extraction and purification processes to ensure that the ingredients are not contaminated (Figure 5). If you go to an herbal shop, many of the herbal supplements are composed of dried herbs only which can increase the chance of fungus and bacteria growth. With Chi supplements, ingredients use fresh herbs that undergo purification and sterilization during the extraction process to ensure that no pathogens and microorganisms contaminate them.

Chi supplements have always been processed in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-approved facilities (Figure 6). Throughout the manufacturing process, quality control is employed to ensure that all products meet or exceed quality and safety standards. Prior to and after the manufacturing process, qualitative, quantitative, heavy metal and microbiology tests are performed to check the integrity of the products. After products pass all tests, export permits are then issued and the products shipped to the United States. Because the products are already sterilized, there is no need for radiation or fumigation, further ensuring that the supplements are not contaminated by harmful chemicals.

Chi supplements are safe and free from heavy metals and contaminants
There are two types of Chi products exported: ingredients only or the finished product. Once finished products are approved for release, the products are then delivered to our US facility. Individual ingredients, on the other hand, are sent to FDA-approved GMP facilities for encapsulation once approved for
release. Prior to encapsulation, an identity test is performed to verify ingredients using HPLC standards. After encapsulation, the finished product needs to pass microbiology tests before being released. After encapsulation, the finished products are delivered in sealed containers to prevent contamination, ready for bottling and labeling (Figure 7).

Heavy metal assays are performed yearly using the PONY test before the finished product is delivered to our US facility. The PONY test is an internationally recognized in the USA, United Kingdom and up to 71 other countries.
Chi supplements packaged in Class-10,000 Clean Room Facility

When supplements are delivered to our facility, they are then packaged at our class 10,000 clean room in Anaheim, California (Figure 8). This 1,000 square ft state-of-the-art clean room consists of 35 hepa filtration unites, with a computerized operation and monitoring system. This means that there is always less than 10,000 particles at any given time, ensuring cleanliness. The longer the system runs, the few the particles, as evidenced by this sample test (Figure 9).

On this particular date, at 11:48 am, there are only a total of 975 particles in the clean room. Just 8 minutes later, through the Hepa filter units, the number of particles has dropped to 576, ensuring that the environment is clean.

The room is also humidity- and temperature- controlled, with Positive Air flow from ceiling. A 4-inch thick, easily washable, clean room wall material separates the office from packaging area.

Automatic bottling and labeling machines are then used by our staff to package the supplements (Figure 8).

A note on color changes of the supplements: Because the location and time of harvest can differ, the color of the powdered extract may differ from time to time. But because the products undergo identity and purity testing, you can be assured that you are getting the same standardized and potent ingredients every time.
Chi supplements backed by scientific research
Chi supplements are not only manufactured under strict safety and quality standards, they are also backed by scientific research. We have over 35 published articles detailing our supplements’ mechanisms, active compounds and functions as well as animal studies and clinical studies that demonstrate their effectiveness.

One of the active compounds in OxyPower, trilinolein (Figure 10), is extracted from a special kind of the herb Hippophae. OxyPower has been scientifically shown to reduce C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and inflammation in various studies.

Angiostop contains several bioactive compounds from a special sea cucumber extract; one of them is Philinopside A shown to effectively inhibit angiogenesis and various types of cancers (Figure 11).

Myomin’s aromatase reducer function is based on an active compound from Cyperus. Asparagus Extract, on the other hand, contains asparaginase, an active component listed in the USP Drug Information book as treatment for lymphoma and leukemia.

Not only are Chi supplements backed by scientific research, we have many clinical data illustrating improvement in various areas: reduction in CRP, homocysteine, cholesterol and an increase in ejection fraction in cardiovascular patients; reduction in estradiol and improvement of testosterone levels in estrogen-dominant conditions; reduction in HbA1c and glucose levels among insulin resistant and diabetes patients; an improvement in creatinine, BUN and eGFR levels among kidney patients; lowering of liver enzymes, ALT and AST, in hepatitis or liver cirrhosis patients; and many more. Here are some examples.

Estradiol Reduced with Myomin in Male Patient on Testosterone Therapy

J. Wright, MD from WA, has a 70 y/o/m patient given daily 75mg bioidentical testosterone cream (BHRT). It increased his testosterone, but his estradiol level increased as well (hyperaromatization). Two months after adding Myomin (3 BID), his estradiol level normalized.

Estrone and Estradiol Reduced with Myomin

G. Depke, ND from CA, has a 52 y/o/m patient whose E1 and E2 levels were high and took Myomin for 4 months.

CRP reduced with OxyPower

P. Minkoff, MD from FL, has a 51 y/o/f patient with high CRP level. After 3 months on OxyPower, her CRP reduced significantly.

Dr. Chi and his research team continually conduct studies to explore additional mechanisms of our products and other ways to improve the herbal formulas. The underlying goal is to always offer you the best quality, potency, and efficacy.
Chi Supplements Approved to be Distributed around the World
From growing the herbs to harvesting to purification to product encapsulation to distribution, Chi supplements undergo rigorous procedures to ensure that ingredient safety, potency and efficacy are met or exceeded. Beyond that, extensive scientific studies are conducted to elucidate various mechanisms and functions of the supplements. For these reasons, thousands of doctors use the supplements themselves and recommend them to their patients.

Chi supplements are so widely used that they have been approved for trade in various countries. In Canada, several products have been licensed and have Natural Product Numbers (NPNs), including Angiostop, Myomin, OxyPower, Liver Chi and Vein Lite. In Europe, Chi supplements are approved for distribution in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands, among others. In Asia, they are widely distributed in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines and Japan, etc. Chi supplements are also distributed in Mexico, Australia and New Zealand.
