Do you have Osteoporosis? Look at your Nails
Have you ever wondered what those bumpy vertical ridges on your nails mean? For women who have a family history of osteoporosis, have thin nails and shrinking height, this can signify osteoporosis. For men, it can signify either osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. Also look at your toenails. If you see bumpy horizontal ridges, the risk for osteoporosis is high.

When you see these ridges that look like beads on a string on your fingernails (Figure 1) and bumpy horizontal ridges on your toes, it is time to check your bone health. So even if you are young and you think your bones are healthy, it is never too early to start fortifying your bones.
A calcium supplement is the most common recommendation as a precautionary measure before osteoporosis starts. However, in some cases, calcium is not absorbed in the bones. Besides, when you already have osteoporosis, a calcium supplement may not be enough. Bisphosphonate drugs like Boniva, Fosamax, Actonel or Zometa may be prescribed. Beware though! Studies have found that these drugs have adverse effects and may actually cause more harm to the bones. Side effects include osteonecrosis of the jaws, fractures in the femur, atrial fibrillation and even esophageal cancer.

YOUTH CHI: Herbal Supplement Naturally Promotes Bone Density without Affecting Estrogen
An herbal supplement like Youth Chi may be a safer choice than bisphosphonates. If you see the bumpy vertical ridges, start taking Youth Chi right away. It can be taken with calcium and Vitamin D3. Also increase sun exposure to about 20 minutes daily to improve bone health.
How Youth Chi works
Youth Chi promotes the absorption of calcium in the bones, increases bone density and reduces calcium loss from bones. It works like calcitonin, a hormone secreted by the thyroid gland.
If calcium in the blood is too high, the thyroid secretes calcitonin to help absorb calcium into the bones and prevent its loss. This process increases the bone-forming protein (Bone Gla protein or BGP) and reduces the bone loss components, pyridinoline (PYD) and deoxypyridinoline (DPD). Studies show that Youth Chi, like calcitonin, increases BGP and reduces PYD and DPD levels, thereby increasing bone formation.
What makes it even more beneficial is that it does not affect estrogen levels. Estrogen is sometimes given to promote bone formation; however, osteoporosis patients with estrogen-dominant conditions such as cysts, fibroids, breast cancer, etc., cannot have any estrogen. These patients can take Youth Chi and Myomin. |
Case Reports
When taking Youth Chi, there are several things you can check to see your progress. The Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test is a bone scan to check the mineral components of your bones. As in this case from Dr. Adams, Youth Chi improves BMD, tested using the DEXA T-Score.
G. Adams, MD from Florida, has a 66 year-old male patient with osteopenia, a tumor in the parathyroid gland and adrenal granuloma. As expected, his T-Score was high at -2.0, which signifies bone loss. His calcium and Vitamin D3 levels were also low. After 3 months on Youth Chi, Vitamin D3 and Angiostop (for the parathyroid tumor), his T-Score improved to -1.9 while his calcium and Vitamin D3 also improved or normalized (Table 1).
These cases from Dr. Schlabach further show Youth Chi’s effectiveness for both osteopenia and osteoporosis, specifically in reducing DPD levels.
E. Schlabach, DC from OH, has two case studies of Youth Chi’s effects on lowering DPD in two elderly postmenopausal females with bone loss. A high level of DPD is associated with rapid bone loss and fracture risk.
Patient 1: A 79-year-old female with Osteopenia
After 4 months on Youth Chi, her DPD reduced by 43% without any other medication. When Youth Chi was increased to 3 capsules, 3 times daily, it resulted in a 45% reduction in DPD levels after 6 months (Table 2).
Patient 2: A 74-year-old female with severe Osteoporosis already using high doses of Vitamin D and calcitonin
After the patient took Youth Chi with Vitamin D and the drug, calcitonin, her DPD reduced by 26% from Dec 2006 to Mar 2007 (Table 3). When she discontinued Youth Chi, taking only Vitamin D and calcitonin, her DPD level increased to 12*. So she started Youth Chi again and, after 7 months, her DPD level reduced to within normal range.
