Dark Band on Nail May Signify Early Melanoma or Other Skin Malignancies
CHI HEALTH LETTER February 6, 2015
FEATURED STORIES

Three days ago, Dr. M. Guevara, MD, visited Dr. Chi and related a story. When she noticed a dark band on a 79-year-old female’s thumb (Figure 1), she immediately told her that it could be a benign nevus or an early sign of melanoma. The patient revealed that her dermatologist already recommended a biopsy of the nail. But Dr. Guevara said that the abnormality is most likely not in the nail itself but somewhere else. So after asking if she had any unusual moles anywhere in the body, the patient confirmed that she does have a mole in her lower abdomen that started out small but has now grown laterally..

This wasn’t the first time that Dr. Guevara encountered something similar. Last year, after learning Fingernail and Tongue Analysis from Dr. Chi, she saw a dark strip on a patient’s nail and immediately suspected skin cancer. There was an irregular mole on the back of his right leg. A dermatologist later confirmed that it was indeed pre-melanoma.

Besides a dark vertical band on the fingernail like in the cases above, sometimes a black mark/mole on the soles of the feet and black line/bands on the toenails may also signal melanoma risk.

J.C., 72-year-old male from New York, had an unusually shaped, split fingernail on his left hand (Figure 2). Dr. Chi suggested that he may have squamous cell carcinoma. He said he did have surgery in 2009 for superficial melanoma on his face. So this time he had it checked out. The first doctor he consulted said that it may just be fungus. Then he consulted with Dr. Buschen, a dermatologist, who conducted a biopsy and confirmed that it was indeed squamous cell carcinoma. He said, “ Thanks Dr. Chi for the correct suggestion.”
Cases like these are testament to the accuracy of using early diagnostic markers for certain conditions. Melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma do show up on the nails very early. In 2003, Dr. Richard Scher, MD, already wrote that melanoma occurs more often on the nails than on the skin, leading to many missed diagnoses.*

It is therefore important not to overlook signs manifested on the nails as it can delay treatment and possibly worsen the condition. So if you see a dark band or white longitudinal streak on the nail, check for irregularly shaped moles and consult your dermatologist.

Do not automatically disregard any nail abnormalities as just a fungal infection since it can mask a more serious condition such as skin cancer.

Melanoma and Estrogen

Studies show that elevated estrogen may play a role in melanoma. Risk of melanoma was found to be higher for patients who did not receive anti-estrogen therapy.* For individuals with melanoma risk and high estrogen, Angiostop and Myomin are recommended, such as in the following case.

S. Lau, ND from Florida, has a 64-year-old female patient who had over 50 cherry angiomas (sign of estrogen dominance) and a 12 mm lump between the breasts. A test later found that the lump was melanoma under the skin. She took Angiostop and Myomin for 6 months. Then she had the lump surgically removed. A PET scan revealed that the melanoma had not spread. Her doctor said that he has never seen melanoma that large that has not metastasized.

HOW TO AVOID AND DEAL WITH SKIN CANCER

If you suspect skin cancer risk, you can reduce your risk of developing it by avoiding sun exposure. Supplements like Asparagus Extract and AGG can also help reduce the risk. Asparagus Extract is rich in organic folate, which is considered to have cancer-preventive and skin-protective properties. AGG is another supplement that is a rich antioxidant. It contains green tea and grape seed extracts which are known to have protective effects against skin cancer.

If you do have the early markers above and have unusual moles on the skin, start taking Angiostop right away. As an angiogenesis inhibitor, it can help stop new blood vessel growth that can feed the abnormal growth. Other supplements like Revivin, Asparagus Extract and Reishi Spore Extract and the Mineral Infrared Therapy (MIT) machine can also be added to help curb the growth, such as in these cases.
CASE REPORTS

K. Hajduk, DC from California, has a 40-year-old female patient with Stage 2 melanoma in her right forearm. She did not want chemotherapy so she used the Mineral Infrared Therapy machine instead and took Revivin, Angiostop, Reishi Spore Extract and Asparagus Extract. One month later, during the operation to take out the melanoma, the surgeon didn’t need to make a deep cut. And her biopsy was negative.

R.P., a 67-year-old male from California, suffered from a severe case of basal cell carcinoma, which eroded away much of his left ear. This caused continuous and profuse bleeding over a six-year period. Even after visiting skin specialists for over six years, the situation never improved. He began taking Angiostop and Revivin and applying Whole Skin ointment and the MIT on the ear lesion at least once or twice daily. Half a year later, 70% of his 7-cm lesion has healed.
