Constantly Elevated Cortisol Not Only Linked to Depression, May Also Lead to Diabetes, Ulcers, Weight Gain, Cardiovascular Disease and more
CHI HEALTH LETTER April 24, 2015
Cortisol is produced and secreted by the adrenal glands and is regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain. As many of you know, it is involved in the body’s “fight-or-flight” response to stress. It becomes elevated to deal with stress and returns to normal when the stress is resolved. But what happens when there is constant stress? Cortisol levels also become chronically elevated, leading to many health repercussions like depression, anxiety or lack of confidence. It can also lead to these problems:

Insulin Resistance and Diabetes

Initially when the body prepares for its fight-or-flight response, cortisol causes an increase in glucose to provide the body with an immediate energy source for the muscles. At the same time, it also blocks the effect of insulin to keep the glucose readily available. So imagine if you are constantly under stress... your cortisol level remains elevated, your glucose remains elevated and your body remains in an insulin-resistant state. Over time, this can lead to Type 2 diabetes.

Weight Gain

Cortisol’s effect on the glucose-insulin state can lead to weight gain. Because the effect of insulin is blocked, the cells are starved for glucose and energy. The body then sends hunger signals to the brain, which can lead to cravings and overeating. Plus the unused glucose will eventually be deposited as body fat. Furthermore, cortisol is also known to affect other hormones that are known to stimulate appetite and cravings.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Ulcers caused by stress – we have all heard that. What happens is that when cortisol is constantly high, the parasympathetic nervous system (which controls digestion and absorption during eating, etc.) is suppressed. So indigestion develops. And the mucosal lining becomes irritated and inflamed, leading to ulcers and other digestive problems.

Increased Risk of Heart Disease

During the fight-or-flight response, cortisol narrows the blood vessels while epinephrine increases heart rate so that blood can pump faster and harder. Eventually, this can lead to blood vessel damage and plaque buildup. This is why constantly stressed out individuals are at an increased risk for heart disease.

These are just some of the wide-ranging effects of chronically elevated cortisol. So it is imperative that we control cortisol. Reducing our level of stress is definitely one way of addressing it. Supplements like Relaxin and Chi Happiness can also help us naturally manage cortisol levels.
RELAXIN reduces Cortisol, Stress, Anxiety and Sleeping Problems

Relaxin is a combination of herbs designed to reduce stress and anxiety as well as manage sleeping problems. One of its mechanisms in dealing with stress is by managing levels of cortisol, immunoglobulin A (IgA), and chromagranin A (CgA). High cortisol, of course, indicates stress. Low IgA indicates delayed stress effect while high CgA indicates psychological stress.

Studies show that Relaxin effectively lowers cortisol, increases IgA and reduces CgA (Figure 1). This consequently helps relieve stress.

Its effect on cortisol can be seen in the following report.

N. T., 60-year-old female from California, has thyroid problems as well as elevated cortisol. After taking Relaxin for about 45 days, her cortisol level normalized (Table 1).

Chi Happiness reduces Cortisol, Depression and Cravings

Chi Happiness is another supplement that can effectively reduce cortisol caused by an overactive Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. In a study on mice, Chi Happiness reduced cortisol level much more effectively than Prozac (Figure 2).

Depression is one of the factors of an overactive HPA axis, which leads to elevated cortisol. This explains why individuals with depression, especially women, have a tendency for cravings and overeating. By increasing serotonin uptake, Chi Happiness can help manage depression. By reducing cortisol, Chi Happiness can also help suppress cravings and manage weight, as evidenced by these reports.

G. Adams, MD from Florida, has a 66-year-old male patient with high cortisol. He experienced much improvement in his cortisol levels after taking Chi Happiness (Table 2).

Cortisol normally reaches its peak in the morning and tapers off throughout the rest of the day. In the case above, it follows an irregular pattern, peaking in the morning and again at night (Table 2). All of levels are also above the normal range. After 8 months on Chi Happiness, his daily cortisol levels, although still slightly elevated at noon, evening and night, now follow a normal pattern. His free cortisol has significantly reduced as well.

T. Waldron, DC from Nevada, reports that his wife was depressed and gained a lot of weight years ago. Then she took Myomin, Pro-Metabolic, Slender All, OxyPower and Chi Happiness. After 4 years, she lost approximately 127 lbs and does not experience depression anymore.

P. Battiade of Synergy Health in California has a 39-year-old male client who was taking Zoloft for a year. He was initially introduced to Chi products when he was in Germany. Synergy Health recommended Chi Happiness and Relaxin. He has been taking both for 2 years now and reports that he does not need Zoloft anymore.
