We are asking your help to spread our call for stories from people impacted by crashes through your organization’s various social media or email channels and/or any of your personal connections in the community. In particular, we want to emphasize the need for stories from those in our community who are overrepresented or a growing share of traffic crash victims (Black / African American and Hispanic /Latinx communities) to ensure they have an opportunity to share their experiences.

Call for Community Involvement

As you know, APD Chief Brian Manley retired earlier this year. During Chief Manley's time:

Currently, to fill former Chief Manley's position, Interim Chief Joe Chacon has been appointed, and the department is beginning a process to seek out and hire a permanent chief. The process to hire Chief Manley was not an open process. After serving in the role on an interim basis, he was selected as the only candidate for interview, and community was only given an opportunity for input or questions after this decision had already been made.

This time around, APD would like to hear what characteristics are most important in the next APD Chief. You can provide feedback by completing the following community feedback questionnaire. You may also send an email to Community@AustinTexas.gov or call Austin 3-1-1.  All submissions will be taken into consideration.

Community Update #2 - Laying the Foundation for Big Ideas

The Equity Tool aims to amplify community voices on how to use funds for displacement prevention during Project Connect. A group of residents known as the 'Catalysts' are co-creating the Equity Tool with help from City staff. The first two meetings with this group laid a foundation of ideas and talked about what they look like in practice. Catalysts and staff from the City, Capital Metro, and Austin Transit Partnership participated in the conversation. During these meetings, we came up with the following definitions as a roadmap for future discussions:

Structural racism is when policies, practices, and procedures work better for white people at the expense of people of color--sometimes unintentionally--over decades and generations. Structural racism has created a far-reaching system that hurts communities of color in Austin and all over.

Racial equity is when race no longer predicts success and outcomes improve for all: in levels of education, income, the likelihood of owning a home, health--even lifespan.

Displacement happens when people are forced to leave their homes and neighborhoods.

Equitable development is when public and private investments, programs, and policies:

  • Meet the needs of all residents, including communities of color
  • Reduce racial disparities
  • Take history and current conditions into account
Power is the ability to define reality for other people. Both internal and external factors can work together to balance power.
