The Fair Housing Act serves as foundational legal protection from discrimination in housing. But despite its judicial successes, it remains a challenge to address extreme racial disparities in renting or owning a home in our community.
This training takes place on Thursday, May 19th at 3 pm CT to learn:
- The basics of the Fair Housing Act of 1968
- Specific rights the Act grants tenants & the limitations of those rights
- How ATC can help Austin area renters and those experiencing homelessness ensure they are granted equal access to safe, decent housing in accordance with the law

The City of Austin Housing and Planning Department (HPD) is looking to hire three summer interns. The internship program is intended to bridge the gap between formal academic training and practical work experience with a focus on underrepresented students. Interns are integrated into the workforce and become engaged in daily issues confronting professional staff in a public sector setting.

Free to educators in Title 1 eligible schools, Project Invent invites innovative educators to join for a one-year Fellowship experience. Fellows empower their students to design solutions to local community challenges, and then pitch their ideas on a national stage. Applications are open until May 31st for any middle or high school educator in North America who is ready to learn and grow with their national community of change-makers!
On May 14th from 10am-1pm, Partners for Education, Agriculture & Sustainability (PEAS) is hosting a Spring Family Fun Event and all are welcome! Activities will include food & nature fun, music, prizes, community tables and more. Location: PEAS Community Farm & Urban Orchard in S. Austin (behind Cunningham Elementary) 2200 Berkeley Ave, 78745.
PEAS will capture the curiosity of youth ages 7-12 outdoors and in the kitchen classroom. Children will participate in the beauty of exploring nature, growing and preparing fresh foods while exercising and having fun! This camp includes a variety of ground-to-table games and activities, including maintaining gardens, exploring outdoors, nature art, planting, growing, harvesting, meal prep, eating and more!
On May 14th from 1-7pm, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center will highlight the accomplishments of mujeres, of womxn, who inspire us! La Mujer is a multidisciplinary festival that will feature a stellar lineup of musicians, poets, visual artists, and womxn business owners participating in community building, networking, education, and entertainment. This is a free public event.
The City of Austin’s Circular Austin Showcase brings circular economy businesses and entrepreneurs together for a one-day pitch event. The event is a chance for local businesses to pitch their zero waste business ideas to a group of investors and judges. The winner will receive $5,000 in prize money, and participants will meet with investors to start/and or grow their businesses. Giving these businesses a stage to pitch their circular economy business ideas helps Austin reduce waste and stay on track to reach its zero waste goal by 2040.
Applications are now open for local businesses to participate in the Showcase this summer. The event will also host a networking session for investors, panelists, entrepreneurs and attendees to connect with each other. Get all the details and apply by May 31: austintexas.gov/CircularShowcase
Attend the Arts + Culture Celebration on the Butler Trail!
Join The Trail Foundation on May 14th for a three-part event to celebrate the unveiling of “Common Waters: A Demonstration Project for the Butler Trail and Lady Bird Lake.” Three local artists, Ruben Esquivel, Reji Thomas, and Taylor Davis have been selected to collaborate, design, and install a temporary art installation on Lady Bird Lake. The installation, titled Common Waters, will explore themes of community, creativity, environment, and collaboration, and will incorporate artistic components as well as ecological function.
The Asian American Resource Center (AARC) is hosting a CelebrASIA Austin event in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month on Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 11am to 3pm. The family friendly festival is free, open to the public, and includes performance groups, musicians, food vendors, and hands-on activities by AARC and community organizations
Take the 2022 Travis County Survey!
Travis County invites county residents to complete the 2022 Community Survey. Answers will help the Travis County Commissioners Court make funding decisions and plan for the future, so County government can continue to provide services and programs that improve quality of life for Travis County residents.
The survey should take less than 10 minutes and can be found at this link. It is available in English, Spanish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, Vietnamese, Urdu, Hindi and Arabic. If you or someone else is unable to take the survey online or if you need it offered in a different language, please call and leave a message here: (512) 854-9070.
Travis County is also developing a Strategic Plan that will focus on areas to help residents in the future. So, the survey also asks about some draft goals for the Plan. Learn more about how the information in this survey will be used by going to www.traviscountytx.gov/publicforum.

The more responses we get, the more responsive we can be. Project Connect Anti-Displacement Community Initiated Solutions
$20 million of Project Connect Anti-Displacement Funding is now available to support programs that benefit residents who live within one mile of Project Connect lines and stations in areas facing risk of displacement.
Nonprofit organizations and partnerships are invited to propose applications for a range of investments that stabilize tenants and homeowners and build economic mobility.

The Austin Parks & Recreation Department is now hiring for summer positions including lifeguards and summer camp staff. Lifeguard and camp staff positions start at $15/hr and offer $500 completion bonuses for qualifying staff. See the attached flyer for more information.

We have received a flood of questions from community members and Austin residents since the Annual Guaranteed Income Pilot Program was approved by City Council last Thursday.

Proposals for Community-Initiated Solutions funding will be evaluated by a panel of community members. Community members who live in areas impacted by Project Connect and are at risk of displacement are especially invited to apply. In addition, community members who have experience with community leadership and engagement, displacement and gentrification, or previous participation in funding review panels are also encouraged to apply.
Once selected, panel members will commit to approximately 30 hours over a period of three to four weeks, including four hours of training. Evaluators will receive a stipend for serving on the panel.
The application deadline is May 20, 2022.
