Fill Out the Our Future 35 Survey!
Austin, Texas is about to go through its largest infrastructure renovation of this century. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been talking about reconstructing I-35 - the actual roadway - for decades. The State is investing $4.5 billion in TxDOT’s I-35 Capital Express Central, to lower and rebuild I-35 through central Austin.
Seizing upon this opportunity, Austin’s Our Future 35 project is a community-centered initiative to reimagine city infrastructure and co-create public spaces over I-35, connecting east and west Austin.
Yes, imagine new land on top of I-35 for new places for the community.
Today, I-35 remains a distinct physical, racial, and socioeconomic divide.
This City-led project seeks to address the historic injustices through a series of caps and stitches that create equitable access to green space, improve public transit access, generate economic opportunity, and connect cultural assets.
For information about the proposed Caps and Stitches, refer to the Our Future 35 website or the TxDOT website.
Note that this initiative is not charged with providing feedback on TxDOT’s I-35 design or process, which includes but is not limited to freeway configuration, ramp design/location, TxDOT’s community engagement process, and the I-35 CapEx Central Environmental Impact Statement. Feedback solicited from this group is limited to the design and programmatic elements of the City’s Caps and Stitches.

Training will be provided by the National Alliance for Preservation Commissions (NAPC) through its Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP).
This training will cover Legal Basics and Standards & Guidelines to prepare participants for the legal and technical frameworks needed to succeed as future commissioners and advocates. Content will focus on best practices, but also Texas and Austin-specific case studies.
Space is limited and will be capped at 30 participants. Reservations will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis through Friday, October 14. Folks should sign up here: https://forms.gle/aJvofmodrVZsu78N9
The goal of CAMP® is to provide high-quality, engaging and informative training to preservation related boards and commissions through presentations, hands-on exercises, group discussions, networking and mentoring via live training. NAPC has an exceptional team of CAMP Trainers including commissioners, local, state and national staff members, attorneys, consultants and commission partners.
Preservation Austin's mission is to empower Austinites to shape a more inclusive, resilient, and meaningful community culture through preservation. We hope to increase racial and ethnic representation on Austin's Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) and to increase racial and ethnic representation among advocates at HLC meetings.
Preservation Austin is hosting this CAMP training with support from a National Preservation Fund Grant through the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
