LEARNING FROM HISTORY

10 Year Commemoration of the Halloween Onion Creek Floods

This month we uplift the communities devasted by the Halloween Onion Creek floods in 2013. Onion Creek has experienced severe flooding as early as 1869. In 2013 Austin received over 10 inches of rain during a single 24 hour period, causing the creek to rise to 11 feet in just 15 minutes. To commemorate this tragic event, Onion Creek flood survivors have been working with artist Alonso Estrada to create a mural. The mural is inspired by an ancient Native American myth of a wild white horse that inhabited Onion Creek. It tells the story of the strength of the flood waters and the fortitude of the community members that survived as they struggled to save their neighbors.

Please come out to the mural unveiling on October 28!

Is your neighborhood prepared for an emergency? The new Neighborhood Prep Guide (en Español!) was spearheaded by Go Austin! Vamos Austin! And Dove Springs resident and GAVA organizer, Frances Acuña. This is a resource to help individuals, families and neighbors create an emergency plan.
