LEARNING FROM HISTORY
This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Annual Austin Powwow, and November is celebrated as Native American Heritage Month.

"For those who grew up in the Native American world, the powwow is the tip of the iceberg. You have to be part of the iceberg to really understand. But for spectators, it's a beginning." -Juan Mancias, a leader of the Carrizo-Comecrudo Indians in Lubbock, p. 30

This article, published over 20 years ago in Texas Highway Magazine, shares about the rich history of the  pau wau through discussion with Indigenous Americans who attended and participated in the Austin Powow at the Toney Burger Center in 2000. This article highlights the sacredness and continued importance of the Powwow and honoring of ancestors and ancestral, spiritual, and healing practices in the Native American community today.

An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States. Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.

An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

In November, as we celebrate American Indian Heritage Month, it's essential to recognize the often overlooked history of Indigenous peoples in the United States. In "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States," historian and activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz provides a fresh perspective on the nation's founding, shedding light on centuries of Indigenous resistance against settler-colonial expansion. This powerful book reveals how policies aimed at Native Americans were designed to displace or eliminate the original inhabitants, challenging the conventional narrative and highlighting the profound impact of these events on American history.
