The Equity Action Team (EAT) is a coalition of community members and City of Austin staff focused on advancing racial equity in our communities through partnerships with City departments, non-profits, philanthropic entities and community-based groups. The EAT meetings are dedicated to critical discussions and strategizing on how to best improve the quality of life for most directly impacted communities in Austin. Join the EAT and find more information on the dashboard.

Everyone is welcome to join the EAT! As a member, your responsibility is to attend and bring your community with you. During our meetings, we hear from community members and City staff to understand community needs and City projects and work together to produce better outcomes for all.

Toni Cade Bambara said "the role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible." Music has been integral to the history of social movements in the U.S. Two classic collections of freedom songs, We Shall Overcome (1963) and Freedom Is A Constant Struggle (1968), are reprinted here in a single edition, which includes a major, new introduction by the editors, words and music to songs, important documentary photographs, and scores of firsthand accounts, by participants in this key movement which reshaped U.S. history.

Gov. Greg Abbott is sending 30 additional Texas Department of Public Safety troopers to continue patrolling Austin, even though city leaders ended a widely criticized partnership in which state troopers helped local police hampered by staffing shortages.
LEARNING FROM HISTORY

Taking it to the Streets: A Visual History of Protest and Demonstration in Austin Online Exhibit

Austin has a long history of mobilization and direct action. From mass marches in support of academic freedom during the Rainey controversy in the 1940s to student walkouts opposing gun violence in 2018, protests intersect race, class, and gender identity and are a mark of U.S. democracy. They are timeless in that they are an inherent part of the human experience. Taking it to the Streets: A Visual History of Protest and Demonstration in Austin is an online exhibit which presents a snapshot look at how the public confronted the political and social issues of their time. Curated by Molly Hults and our very own Amanda Jasso!

The REBEL Fund Deadline extended to July 21!

It has been a vision of Rosa Rebellion since our inception to support the disruption of the very white-centric systems of philanthropy and impact funding that largely exclude the voices of women of color and/or under-values our work. Rooted in the work of equity and racial justice, we've envisioned unapologetically writing checks, as an act of investing in the bold, beautiful and brilliant creative activism of women of color across this country. The Rebel Fund applications are now open July 1-21 . Three women will be selected to receive $10,000 each and be enveloped in a practice of decolonized support and community.

Get those applications in while you still can. And at just 2,000 words describing your project idea and vision for our collective BIPOC futures it’s worth a try. If you haven’t already, apply today!

Saturday, July 22 | 10AM-1PM
Terrazas Branch, Austin Public Library, 1105 E Cesar Chavez

Preservation Austin and the Austin History Center welcome community members to this oral history workshop for individuals who participated in or have memory of Community Activism during the 1970s Chicano Movement in East Austin. The Economy Furniture Strike, colloquially known as the “Austin Chicano Huelga”, was the initial spark of the Chicano movement in East Austin that birthed a generation of Chicano politicians and activists. Participants will learn how to conduct oral histories for their families and friends, with an option to sign up and be interviewed about their experiences during this time in Austin’s history. (Participants will be signing up to be interviewed on a separate day) Participants will learn how to conduct an oral history interview with the same professionalism and skills that historians use. The group workshop will inform members of the community how to ask historical questions, and how to conduct a great oral history interview!

One Austin: Our Resilience Framework for Action is based on stakeholder engagement, review of previous and current relevant initiatives, and preliminary research. As a result, the CRO and Office of Resilience, Community Advisory Committee, City departments, and Resilient Cities Catalyst developed the cross-cutting priorities, aspirations, and discovery questions outlined in this Framework. This Framework is a starting point and will be fleshed out over the next year through extensive community engagement—resulting in the release of Resilient Austin, which will articulate the city’s collective vision of a more resilient Austin.
