The Equity Action Team (EAT) is a coalition of community members and City of Austin staff focused on advancing racial equity in our communities through partnerships with City departments, non-profits, philanthropic entities and community-based groups. The EAT meetings are dedicated to critical discussions and strategizing on how to best improve the quality of life for most directly impacted communities in Austin. Join the EAT and find more information on the dashboard.

Everyone is welcome to join the EAT! As a member, your responsibility is to attend and bring your community with you. During our meetings, we hear from community members and City staff to understand community needs and City projects and work together to produce better outcomes for all.

The essential, sweeping story of Juneteenth's integral importance to American history, as told by a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Texas native. Interweaving American history, dramatic family chronicle, and searing episodes of memoir, Annette Gordon-Reed, the descendant of enslaved people brought to Texas in the 1850s, recounts the origins of Juneteenth and explores the legacies of the holiday that remain with us.

This report provides a recap of safety initiatives led by the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department’s (TPW) Vision Zero program in 2021 and 2022. All of the work is in service toward achieving the City’s adopted policy goal of eliminating traffic-related serious injuries and fatalities. One of the key trends identified in the report is that Austin’s Black population continued to be significantly overrepresented among severe crash victims. While Black people make up less than 7% of the Austin population, they accounted for 15% of people seriously injured or killed in crashes over the past two years.
LEARNING FROM HISTORY
Austin History Center, PICA-05478
This image, taken by Grace Murray Stephenson, is part of a series of photographs documenting the 1900 Juneteenth celebration held in Wheeler's Grove, now known as Eastwoods Park in Austin. Members of the Wheatville and Horst's Pasture freedom communities organized celebrations at Wheeler's Grove from the 1860s-1910s, featuring activities such as the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, pageants, parades, contests, music, and speeches from local politicians and church leaders. Access to Wheeler's Grove was prohibited to the Black community after the 1928 City Plan of Austin was implemented. Celebrations continued to take place in Emancipation Park in East Austin, land purchased by the Emancipation Celebration Association in 1905. However this property was also seized by the City of Austin in 1938 to make way for the construction of Rosewood Courts, the first public housing development a part of the 1937 Housing Act. To see the full collection of photographs from this series, see the Austin History Center's Digital Collections Site.
