The Equity Action Team (EAT) is a coalition of community members and City of Austin staff focused on advancing racial equity in our communities through partnerships with City departments, non-profits, philanthropic entities and community-based groups.

The EAT meetings are dedicated to critical discussions and strategizing on how to best improve the quality of life for most directly impacted communities in Austin. Join the EAT and find more information on the dashboard.

Everyone is welcome to join the EAT! As a member, your responsibility is to attend and bring your community with you. During our meetings, we hear from community members and City staff to understand community needs and City projects and work together to produce better outcomes for all.

EQUITY OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Saturday, January 27th, 2024
9:30am-4:30pm at VUKA North Lamar

Help us get the word out by using the Equity Forum 2024 Social Media Toolkit!
You can access all graphics for various media, prepped posts, and an email invite template all in one place.
We can't wait to see you there!
The Equity Office collaborated with Austin Public Library and others to put the Enhanced Library Card Program in place. This form of ID is recognized by many City of Austin departments and organizations as a valid form of identification. This can be especially helpful for people experiencing homelessness, people experiencing reentry (formerly incarcerated), and immigrant communities.
Check out the Equity Office staff at the Youth Career Fest this past Wednesday!
We got to engage with many students and youth, fellow City of Austin staff, teachers, and local businesses.
Many of the students we spoke with expressed an interest in learning more about racial equity, and many stated that they were involved in normalizing conversations around race and taking action in student groups on their campus or groups in their community. We left feeling so inspired and hopeful for the future for our youth!

LEARNING FROM HISTORY
We are getting excited for our Equity Forum, Another World is Possible, TOMORROW, Saturday, February 27th!
The forum will address themes such as housing justice, immigration and migration, and how creative activation can be tools for community organizing. In this same vein, we wanted to highlight the work of Artistas Indigenas, a 1980's national indigenous organization that believed that:
“art is a vehicle that can facilitate an awareness of international struggles for human rights and social equality.”
In this episode of Let the People Speak! Host Trella Laughlin talks with members of the Austin, Texas chapter of Artistas Indigenas Mary Sue Galindo and Marsha Gomez.
Let the People Speak! was a local television program that aired on Austin’s community access station, from 1980 to 1996. It was created and produced by Trella Ann Laughlin and covered various performances, cultural events, and social justice issues both locally and internationally.

As we approach February, Black History month is upon us, and the Equity Office will welcome Living Cities staff to Austin.
We hope you'll take the time this upcoming month to explore the profound and enduring impact of systemic racism on Black, Indigenous, and people of color in America with 'Systemic Racism 101.' From the arrival of Columbus in 1492 to the contemporary struggles highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement, the book delves into the historical roots of societal, economic, and infrastructural inequality. Complex concepts such as reparations, the prison industrial complex, and redlining are presented through insightful infographic spreads and explanatory text, providing a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by BIPOC Americans. In a time saturated with information on structural racism, this book serves as a vital resource, guiding readers through key historical milestones and offering actionable insights for fostering equality.

A CHIP (Community Health Improvement Plan) is an action-oriented plan that outlines the community health issues based on CHA (Community Health Assessment) findings. The community and partners work together to identify how issues will be addressed and how to measure progress. Ultimately, the long-term goal is to improve the community’s health.

Community members, partners, and stakeholders are working together to address health issues where we live, learn, work, and play. Events were convened where Community members discussed what improvements they would like to see. This process and its findings are summarized in the Community Health Assessment (CHA). Using the community’s feedback, a comprehensive Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) was drafted. Partners and stakeholders throughout Austin/ Travis County are working on the CHIP’s strategies and objectives with the shared goal of making measurable progress in each area.

Join the Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center for the new exhibition Two Births and the Afterlife by artist Aimée M. Everett

Two Births and the Afterlife features a new body of work by Milwaukee-based artist Aimée M. Everett, exploring the profound transformations experienced during childbirth and the subsequent journey of self-discovery into motherhood. The artist delves into the poignant realization that with every birth, a simultaneous death exists—the departure of one's former identity to welcome a new, evolved self. The exhibition will be on display January 11 through April 20, 2024.  The exhibit is free and open to the public.

The Blanton Museum of Art Presents...

Unbreakable: Feminist Visions from the Gilberto Cardenas and Dolores Garcia Collection

On Display Until March 31, 2024

Unbreakable presents artworks with an emphasis on Latina and Chicana artists and their stories of survival and resilience. Selected from the landmark Gilberto Cárdenas and Dolores Garcia Collection, which the Blanton recently acquired, these works explore a major theme shaping the couple’s distinctive collecting practice: art with a feminist framework. Created with various techniques since the 1970s, these works of art represent the act of surviving difficult or violent realities, ranging from immigration and poverty to misogyny and genocide. Artists make figures visible in society who have been overlooked or exploited over time, championing matriarchs, community members,  malcriadas [bad-mannered girls], domestic workers, and the rebellious “other.” The artists in  Unbreakable present the ways in which women and gender nonconforming people navigate, surpass, and dismiss societal boundaries, advocating the belief that a feminist future is possible.

Curated by Claudia Zapata, Associate Curator, Latino Art, Blanton Museum of Art.

Join CAN (Community Action Network) for their Race Equity Principles in Practice Training in 2024!

Many of us have taken race equity trainings such as Beyond Diversity or Undoing Racism, and upon finishing, have wondered "what's next?" We have created a series of trainings that will focus on ways to utilize the lessons learned in these race equity trainings in our daily lives, in our work, and in our community. The series of trainings will require you to reflect on your past racialized experiences, research your community and nation's racial history, and learn about ways to actively engage in local work aimed at addressing racial inequality.

In order to participate in the series, you would need to be able to attend all 4 sessions in the series as each session builds off each other. All sessions will be on Zoom from 11:30am - 1 pm. A calendar invite with the Zoom login credentials will be sent to you after you register.
