EQUITY OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS
AFSSA-Asian Family Support Services of Austin. One Day Summit: Partners in Progress: Disrupting Violence, Building Hope. Saturday, April 20, 9am-5pm (CST) at ACC Highland.
How do you imagine our EAT Community for 2024 and beyond? We are looking for feedback from our growing EAT network as we move toward developing our collective future together and creating a network/'net that works'.
Collage of Forum photos
was amazing! Thank you to all who attended, and if you couldn't make it, we hope to see you at our next forum! We enjoyed amazing food, engaging and thoughtful speakers, dancing, laughing, and some crying, too. We made bracelets and collages, and enjoyed building relationships with each other. The key question that left us with some food for thought: what does it look like to move away from organizing around identity politics and move towards organizing around our political futures?

We also had an amazing local artist, Rebecca Sanchez, do screen-printing on-site at our forum, and she also designed the amazing flyer for the event.

The Forum website is still live if you'd like to take a look at all of our wonderful speakers and panelists that attended.
Thanks again to all of YOU, our EAT Network, for your support of this fantastic event!

The Equity Office also welcomed Living Cities staff on their visit to Austin! The City of Austin team is working to normalize and organize departments across the city to center racial equity in all of their work. The Equity Office, in partnership with Living Cities, hopes to strengthen city staff’s intersectional analysis around how race, class, and other systems are interconnected to address and prevent the harmful implications of gentrification.

The Equity Office learned about the history of our Office's partnership with Living Cities, and the CTG (Community Transformation Grant), as well as updates from UpTogether and ACLT (Austin Community Land Trust). The Equity Office and Living Cities also went on site tours around Austin that are relevant to our work on the Business Starts & Growth and Homeownership strategies for BIPOC. The Equity Office was also provided with technical assistance.

LEARNING FROM HISTORY

1963 Civil Rights March

Description: People marching on their way to the Texas State Capitol on August 28, 1963. Many people hold posters and banners that read "Freedom Now" and "Jim Crow Must Go." Both black and white people march, and young boys are in the foreground. This image was created by Fanny Velma "Fran" Normann.

You can also view a video of the 1963 Civil Rights Demonstration in Austin at the Texas Archive of Moving Images: Civil Rights Demonstration in Austin (1963).

On August 28, 1963, a NAACP pro-integration march and rally was countered by the pro-segregationist group, the Indignant White Citizens Council (IWCC)--the same march from the photo you see above. The pro-integration parade and rally accumulated a mixed-race crowd of up to 4,000 people. Led by Booker T. Bonner, a member of the Freedom Now Committee, the "March for Jobs and Freedom" sought to protest against Governor John Connally's opposition to expanding civil rights legislation. The IWCC's counter-demonstration—led by Bobby Joiner, a grocer from Grand Prairie—consisted of eleven protesters heckling the NAACP marchers. This series of news clips, shot by KTBC cameraman Gordon Wilkison, captures the event. Please note that the audio in this film is poor in places.

Black History month is here, and the Equity Office welcomed Living Cities staff to Austin.
We hope you'll take the time this upcoming month to explore the profound and enduring impact of systemic racism on Black, Indigenous, and people of color in America with 'Systemic Racism 101.' From the arrival of Columbus in 1492 to the contemporary struggles highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement, the book delves into the historical roots of societal, economic, and infrastructural inequality. Complex concepts such as reparations, the prison industrial complex, and redlining are presented through insightful infographic spreads and explanatory text, providing a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by BIPOC Americans. In a time saturated with information on structural racism, this book serves as a vital resource, guiding readers through key historical milestones and offering actionable insights for fostering equality.

Join CAN (Community Action Network) for their Race Equity Principles in Practice Training in 2024!

Many of us have taken race equity trainings such as Beyond Diversity or Undoing Racism, and upon finishing, have wondered "what's next?" We have created a series of trainings that will focus on ways to utilize the lessons learned in these race equity trainings in our daily lives, in our work, and in our community. The series of trainings will require you to reflect on your past racialized experiences, research your community and nation's racial history, and learn about ways to actively engage in local work aimed at addressing racial inequality.

In order to participate in the series, you would need to be able to attend all 4 sessions in the series as each session builds off each other. All sessions will be on Zoom from 11:30am - 1 pm. A calendar invite with the Zoom login credentials will be sent to you after you register.
