March EAT Recap:
At our March EAT meeting, we heard from Robert Painter, an attorney with American Gateways, about SB4 and knowing your rights. The Equity Office along with Catholic Charities, has hosted several SB4/Know Your Rights Workshops to help our community understand the law and your rights under SB4.
If you missed an SB4-Know Your Rights Workshop, there is another opportunity coming up April 10th, hosted by Vanessa Fuentes (D2) and Jose Velasquez's (D3) offices in partnership with American Gateways--see the 'City & Community Happenings' section of the newsletter.
We also welcomed a presentation about the Equity-Based Preservation plan. Cara Bertron from the City of Austin's Planning Department shared updates on the plan and it's drafted goals, discussed the 3 pillars of the plan: What We Preserve, Who Preserves, and How We Preserve. She also shared recommendations that came from the community engagement, and explained how community got involved to share their input through an equity lens.

Due to changes in Meta's archiving capabilities, the EAT Facebook Group will no longer be used starting April 20.To ensure transparency and legal compliance, we're switching to a Facebook Business Page at https://www.facebook.com/CityofAustinEquityOffice
for our communications.
Stay connected with us!
- The City of Austin is required by law to archive the contents of its social media accounts for records retention and Public Information Requests (PIR).
- Meta will be discontinuing third-party access to the Facebook Groups API—which means we will no longer be able to archive any of our current Facebook Groups.
- Since the ability to archive is an essential function of any social media platform we use, the City has decided to stop using Facebook Groups and we will be moving our communications over to https://www.facebook.com/CityofAustinEquityOffice
- We recognize the value of this Group and the interruption this change will cause. It is our goal to make this as seamless a transition as possible.

"The Texas Blind, Deaf, and Orphan School, a charity-sponsored institution for black children, was located on a hundred-acre tract on Bull Creek Road between 38th and 45th streets, about four miles northwest of the Austin business district. It was established as the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Institute for Colored Youth in 1887 by the 18th Legislature.
The initial campus consisted only of an eleven-room residence, but in 1888 a new two-story brick building was added to provide more classroom and dormitory space. Various additions and renovations took place during the next several decades; by the 1940s the school had twelve brick buildings and one stone building, including dormitories, classrooms, hospital, superintendent's residence, and dining room." -Description from TSD's Deaf Black History page
Today, Austin is home to the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD), founded in 1865. But it wasn't until 1965 when Black and white Deaf students could attend school together at TSD. Black Deaf students were denied access to white schools for the Deaf, as well as clubs and organizations for white Deaf people--so Black Deaf people started their own clubs and organizations in the 1950's and 1960's in major cities that had larger Black Deaf populations.

At last month's March EAT Meeting, the EAT shared what plant they would be if they could plant themselves (such as a tree, flower, vegetable or fruit, etc.) This question prompted some beautiful responses, and helped us ground ourselves in this season of growth, and reflect on the 'seeds' we have planted for ourselves, our families, and our communities. This question was inspired by this month's book recommendation,
The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson.
"Rosalie Iron Wing has grown up in the woods with her father, Ray, a former science teacher who tells her stories of plants, of the stars, of the origins of the Dakota people. Until, one morning, Ray doesn't return from checking his traps. Told she has no family, Rosalie is sent to live with a foster family in nearby Mankato - where the reserved, bookish teenager meets rebellious Gaby Makespeace, in a friendship that transcends the damaged legacies they've inherited. On a winter's day many years later, Rosalie returns to her childhood home. A widow and mother, she has spent the previous two decades on her white husband's farm, finding solace in her garden even as the farm is threatened first by drought and then by a predatory chemical company. Now, grieving, Rosalie begins to confront the past, on a search for family, identity, and a community where she can finally belong. In the process, she learns what it means to be descended from women with souls of iron - women who have protected their families, their traditions, and a precious cache of seeds through generations of hardship and loss, through war and the insidious trauma of boarding schools."--Provided by publisher. |

Register for the Transit & EV Supportive Code Amendments Online Meeting on April 20th, 2024 10am-12pm on Zoom
The City of Austin's Planning Department, at City Council's direction, is proposing several changes to the land development code. The goal is to make our city more walkable, transit-supportive, and environmentally friendly for all residents.
Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (ETOD), updated compatibility standards, and a smaller minimum lot size for a house will unlock opportunities for more housing, including affordable housing, throughout the city, especially along our busiest transit corridors. Developing regulations for where we put electric vehicle charging sites will help make this green mobility option more available while making sure we do so in a way that works for all of Austin.
These code amendments will help our city reach our adopted mobility, affordability, and climate goals. They will also help make us more competitive when applying for federal funding for the Project Connect Light Rail Transit program. That's because the new housing will support higher ridership for our voter-approved Austin Light Rail service, and economic development along the corridors will also bring community benefits. These changes to the code have been informed by years of community conversation and were requested after careful deliberation by City Council.
