This September, we're recommending...
Martha Menchaca begins with the Spanish settlement of Texas, exploring how Mexican Americans' racial heritage limited their incorporation into society after the territory's annexation. She then illustrates their political struggles in the nineteenth century as they tried to assert their legal rights of citizenship and retain possession of their land, and goes on to explore their fight, in the twentieth century, against educational segregation, jury exclusion, and housing covenants. It was only in 1967, she shows, that the collective pressure placed on the state government by Mexican American and African American activists led to the beginning of desegregation. Menchaca concludes with a look at the crucial role that Mexican Americans have played in national politics, education, philanthropy, and culture, while acknowledging the important work remaining to be done in the struggle for equality. |

Foster Care Research Interview Sign-Up
ECHO, UT, and Change 1 are partnering to do an IRB-approved study on the intersection of foster care and homelessness. Local and national data show that aging out of the foster care system can be a strong predictor of experiencing homelessness as an adult. As such, we’re looking to interview youth with lived experience of both the foster care system and homelessness to see what local gaps they’ve experienced in services and supports.
If you know of anyone 18 – 25 years old who might be interested,
please send them this sign-up form.
All interviews will be one hour long and held either at ECHO’s office (please see my signature below for the address) or via Zoom. Interviewees will be compensated with a $50 virtual Amazon gift card.
If you have any questions about the study, please email myself or Dr. Barbara Ball (Barbara.Ball@austin.utexas.edu).

St. David’s Foundation seeks to support nonprofit organizations, local government, or collaboratives working to improve affordable housing for low- to moderate-income households in Central Texas.
We believe housing is a platform for health and are committed to advancing safe and affordable housing designed for and by our community.
This call is intended to increase affordable housing capacity in all parts of the five-county region served by the Foundation. It is designed to introduce financial support where it is often hardest to secure. Planning funds (to convene community and explore early ideas) and predevelopment funds (cover costs that precede construction and long-term financing such as architectural and engineering fees and market studies) are generally the most challenging parts of affordable housing financing to obtain, since lenders and other funders see these projects as high risk.
Funding will be up to $8M with a maximum grant amount of $750,000 per project.
