- The Texas Supreme Court is set to decide the legal battle over El Paso migrant shelter’s future. Earlier this week, Justices heard arguments from Annunciation House, which is fighting to stay open, and the Texas Attorney General’s office, which claims the shelter’s work with migrants violates state law.
- New documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union reveal that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is actively considering proposals to expand its immigration detention capacity in Texas as well as California, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, and Washington state.
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced it would not move forward with the naturalization test redesign. Critics said the changes to the test would create unnecessary barriers, making the process harder for applicants.
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador, Venezuela, Ukraine and Sudan.
- The U.S. government will return millions in application fees to immigrants who sought adjustment of status through a Biden administration program halted by a federal court. Nearly 94,000 applicants who paid $580 each will be reimbursed. The program would have offered temporary legal status and a path to permanent residency for those who had lived in the U.S. for 10+ years without serious criminal records. Importantly, it eliminated the need for applicants to leave the U.S., which would normally trigger a lengthy reentry ban under current immigration rules.
- K-12 schools across the U.S. are gearing up for potential efforts to shield their students as the incoming administration sets its sights on deporting millions of people. Administrators and teachers’ unions are looking to build relationships and provide resources for students and families without legal status as President-elect Trump has pledged the largest mass deportation in history, floating the end of policies barring immigration raids at schools and places of worship.

Community Defender Training: Understanding Your Rights and Protecting Your Community Under the New Administration
Join the National Immigration Project for a free webinar for community defenders, advocates, and impacted community members to go over the basics of what you can do to protect yourself and your community in the face of potential immigration enforcement. RSVP here.
We'll go over what immigration policies have changed in the first week of the Trump administration; a primer on your Fourth Amendment rights; and ways for families to prepare in case of an arrest by immigration officials. No matter who is president, everyone living in the U.S. has certain basic rights under the U.S. Constitution. Undocumented immigrants have these rights, too. It is important that we all assert and protect our basic rights.
If you find you have to deal with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or other law enforcement officers at home, on the street, or anywhere else, remember that you have the rights described in this factsheet from the National Immigration Law Center. The factsheet also provides suggestions for what you should do to assert your rights.
The factsheet is available in English, Spanish, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Korean and Arabic.
