June Immigrant Affairs Update

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Last year, we launched our first Immigrant Integration Grant Program. We awarded funding to 12 organizations total and we're now excited to share project highlights from some of the organizations that received funding!

Todos Juntos Learning Center

Todos Juntos' mission is to support the academic and social well-being of immigrant and refugee families through education, empowerment, and community support. Founded in 2009, Todos Juntos (All Together) Learning Center improves the academic and social well-being of English language learning parents and children through dual-generation education and wraparound services.

Created by and for immigrant women and their families, Todos Juntos is a deep-impact, dual-generation school that is community-based, family-centered, culturally appropriate, and open to all English language learners. By centering the needs of immigrant families and developing culturally appropriate programming, they foster a community of dignity for families to realize their own educational and economic success, the foundation for generational stability, wellness, and self-sufficiency. This year we returned to in-person learning and programming through the generous support of the City of Austin and their Immigrant Integration Grant.

Central Health Community Champions
Deadline to Apply: June 15, 2022

Community Health Champions is an annual Central Health program that brings together diverse community members from across Travis County to learn about, discuss, and collaborate on our work to improve the health of Central Texas. Through a five-month workshop series, participants learn about the health care system for Travis County residents with low income and how Central Health and its partners come together to address health disparities. Health Champions are challenged to think outside of their individual realities to become advocates for health care access and equity in their communities. Learn more here.

Climate change impacts all of us, but the impacts aren’t felt equally across our communities. The Community Climate Ambassadors program looks to center the voices of people who have been systematically left out of, misrepresented in, or ignored during climate change conversations.

Through a six-month paid program, Community Climate Ambassadors will learn about environmental justice, plan community-based projects, and collaborate with others to move towards positive change. We highly encourage organizations and engaged community members representing low-income communities and communities of color to apply. Learn more and apply here.

STATE & NATIONAL UPDATES
  • A new report published by researchers at the Georgetown Law Center on Privacy & Technology details how ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has used a combination of public records and privately acquired information to build a surveillance system that can investigate the majority of US adults with little oversight. You can read the report titled "American Dragnet" here.
  • TRAC (Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse) reports an increase of Ukrainians at the U.S.-Mexico border and how decisions in April made by CBP (Customs and Border Protection) port authorities differed markedly for Ukrainians as compared with other nationalities.
  • The Biden administration has rolled out a new process rule that aims to expedite the processing of migrants who ask for humanitarian protection along the southern border. However, many immigrant rights advocates are highlighting the confusion and challenges created by the new rule. Human Rights First produced a fact sheet to help explain the new process rule.
  • A federal judge granted a preliminary injunction blocking the Biden administration from ending Title 42. The American Immigration Council produced a guide to help the public understand Title 42 expulsions at the border.
  • Following months of pressure from a national advocacy campaign led by a coalition of immigrants in detention, local detention visitation groups and immigrant rights organizations across the immigration detention abolition movement, ICE announced a phased return to social visitation at detention facilities.
  • U.S. CIS (Citizenship and Immigration Services) has published an updated list of resources about the public charge rule in an effort to help reduce confusion and fear related to accessing critical government services.
