STATE & NATIONAL UPDATES
  • Governor Abbott has now added Los Angeles to the list of destinations where migrants are being bused from Texas.
  • Governor Abbott called for an immediate special session, just hours after lawmakers completed the year’s regular legislative session without passing numerous key bills state leaders had identified as priorities. The special session will be focused on property tax relief and border security.
  • The state of Texas is suing the Biden administration over the CBP One App. The app allows migrants to set up interviews with asylum officers at the U.S.-Mexico border.
  • Cities and counties are suing to keep migrants out of their communities, following efforts from Texas and Florida governors to bus migrants to other states.
  • Despite efforts to provide pro bono representation, growth is failing to meet exploding demands in immigration court.
  • Immigrant advocates are suing the Biden administration over the new asylum ban.
  • A bipartisan immigration reform bill was recently introduced in the House of Representatives. The Dignity Act would create a 12-year path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and provide additional resources for border enforcement. The legislation also would reform the US asylum system to make it more efficient.
  • The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it is establishing a process to re-parole eligible Afghan nationals so they can continue living and working legally in the United States.

Immigrant Communities on the Frontline of Climate Disasters

As climate change accelerates, extreme weather events like storms, floods, and fires are becoming more frequent and intense. Immigrants and refugees are among the communities hit first and worst by climate disasters in the U.S. and are often left behind in response and recovery efforts. In this webinar, we'll share how immigrant justice organizations have been responding to extreme weather in a way that keeps our communities safe, builds power, and fights for racial and economic justice in our disaster response policies. Register here.

This webinar will feature NPNA and Climate Justice Collaborative Members: the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), the Louisiana Organization for Refugees and Immigrants (LORI), the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), Unite Oregon, and Woori Juntos.
