March Immigrant Affairs Update
We know that the past month following Winter Storm Uri have been challenging for our communities. I hope that you've been able to take time to rest and care for yourselves as you work hard to help care for others. Read below for more information and resources that may be useful as our communities continue to work to recover from this disaster.

We also want to express our solidarity with our AAPI relatives who are experiencing pain and fear following a surge in anti-Asian racism across the country. We know that these are not isolated incidents, they are a symptom of intersecting symptoms of oppression, and we're committed to dismantling the systems of opporession that lead to hateful acts of violence. None of us are safe until all of us are safe.
THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT:
STOP AAPI HATE

In response to the alarming escalation in xenophobia and bigotry resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Asian Pacific Planning and Policy Council (A3PCON), Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA), and the Asian American Studies Department of San Francisco State University launched the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center on March 19, 2020. The center tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Their approach recognizes that in order to effectively address anti-Asian racism we must work to end all forms of structural racism leveled at Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color.

Their 5-pronged approach is to:

– Serve as the leading aggregator of anti-Asian hate incidents
– Offer multilingual resources for impacted community members
– Provide technical assistance from rapid response to preventative measures
– Support community-based safety measures and restorative justice efforts
– Advocate for local, state, and national policies that reinforces human rights and civil rights protections

Bystander Intervention Virtual Trainings
The Asian Pacific Islander Work Group has been hosting My API Live sessions on Facebook Live on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month at 10am.

My API Live broadcasts brings the viewers/listeners accurate and updated COVID-19-related information to keep our communities safe, healthy and informed. All information centers around API/AAPI communities and is also relevant for the greater Austin community. During the live broadcasts there is simultaneous interpretation available in Burmese, Mandarin and Vietnamese by dialing directly to the phone numbers on the flyer. Having a Facebook account is not necessary to watch My API Live on the APH site.

Anti-Asian and Asian American and xenophobic harassment are on the rise across the U.S. Unfortunately, anti-Asian racism and xenophobia is not a new phenomenon. It has been part of our histories for a long time, and we have seen it manifested in many ways over the years.

One way we can take action to protect our communities is to learn ways to intervene effectively as a bystander without compromising safety. We're excited to announce that Hollaback! and Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC are partnering for a virtual workshop on bystander intervention.

The one-hour, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!'s 5 D's of bystander intervention methodology. Register for a training here.
